Partial Road Closures Scheduled for Northbound I-5
If you are driving through the downtown Sacramento area this weekend, you may want to plan for additional travel time. There will be some major road work and road closures from 10 p.m. Friday, May 13, through 5 a.m Monday, May 16.
Northbound Interstate 5 is scheduled for more road work and closures this weekend. Caltrans said crews are expected to continue partial highway closures for the FixSac5 Project.
Crews will set and remove k-rail, haul concrete, pour concrete, stripe, drill, and drainage work on northbound Interstate 5 from the Highway 50 interchange to J Street.
Locations Expected to be Closed
The following locations will be closed:
- Westbound Highway 50 to the northbound I-5 connector
- W Street on-ramp to northbound I-5
- P Street on-ramp to northbound I-5
- 15th Street on-ramp to the westbound U.S. 50
- Northbound I-5 to J Street off-ramp
All ramps and lanes are scheduled to reopen on Monday, May 16, by 5 a.m.
Detours
If you must drive through downtown Sacramento, you can take a few detours to avoid the roadwork area. If you are coming from Highway 50 westbound to Interstate 5 northbound, continue on Highway 50, keep right, then take the Interstate 80 towards Reno.
To access northbound I-5 to the J Street off-ramp, there are two options:
- Option 1: use the exit at Q street.
- Option 2: use the Richards Boulevard exit, turn left at Richards Boulevard, then left onto southbound I-5 to J Street.
Taking Alternative Routes
To help reduce traffic and minimize delays around Sacramento, drivers are encouraged to:
- Take State Highway 99.
- Use Interstate 80 as an alternate route around the construction work zone.
- Use alternative transportation such as ride-sharing, public transportation, biking, or walking to your destination.
Those choosing to take Interstate 5 during the partial roadwork and closures should expect traffic delays.
Be Cautious of Work Vehicles in the Area
Commercial work vehicles will be traveling in and out of the Sacramento project site. Residents living nearby can expect to hear commercial truck backup beeping noises and loud construction throughout the day and night hours.
The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph through the construction zone. The California Highway Patrol will be in the area to patrol and give tickets to drivers who do not adhere to the posted speed limit signs. Reducing the speed limit is essential to keep the workers and motorists safe.
About the FixSac5 Project
The road work is part of the Interstate 5 Corridor Enhancement Project to build 23 miles of new carpool lanes and fix 67 miles of roadway. The $370 million project extends from the American River Bridge to one mile south of the Elk Grove Boulevard Overcrossing.
The project will:
- Construct new carpool lanes
- Rehabilitate pavement, replace a pedestrian overcrossing
- Install new fiber-optic lines
- Install new ramp meters
- Construct sound walls
- Repair existing electrical and drainage systems
Once the project is completed, the newly upgraded highway will:
- Provide more reliable peak travel times
- Improve traffic operations by reducing travel time and congestion
- Improve air quality by promoting carpool
- Provide travel time incentives for drivers to use carpools or buses during peak travel times
The project is expected to be completed by December 2022.
