September Sights
Of all the seasons, Autumn seems to have the best publicist. Even while Sacramento continues to have triple-digit temperatures in our forecast throughout the first part of September, the onslaught of fall-related propaganda has already begun. Starbucks just released its Pumpkin Spice Latte, the iconic bellwether of the season, so now we can expect social media feeds to quickly transition to scenes of cozy scarves, pumpkin-adorned porches, and glowing candles, even as we swelter through the last weeks of summer.
The formal arrival of Fall does not happen until the latter half of September. Until we get to that date, there are several obscure national days of recognition to celebrate along with way – and lucky for us, many of them place emphasis on food and beverages. So, in honor of a bunch of made-up holidays, let’s read, eat and drink our way towards Fall.
September 6, 2020: National Read a Book Day
As the days begin to grow shorter, relaxing with a good book seems like a natural transition into Autumn. Fortunately, there is no shortage of good reading material to choose from. Some current favorites from the staff at AutoAccident.com include:
- Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
- The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
- Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement by John Lewis and Mike D’Orso
September 7, 2020: National Beer Lover’s Day
This is an easy one for Sacramentans to celebrate. We have an abundance of great local breweries throughout the region. A couple of our top choices:
- Track 7 Brewing Company at 3747 West Pacific Avenue, Suite F, Sacramento.
- Device Brewing Company at 8166 14th Avenue, Suite A, Sacramento.
September 10, 2020: National TV Dinner Day
Give yourself a break from cooking and enjoy a convenience meal from the freezer section. They have come a long way since the aluminum-encased Salisbury steak that took two hours to cook. Frozen pizzas, in particular, have improved greatly, but there are many other tasty options to consider:
- Trader Joe’s Chicken Tikka Masala – Frozen food is never going to be as good as a freshly cooked meal, but this entree comes close. The sauce is flavorful, the chicken is recognizable, and the rice is fluffy.
- Stouffer’s Veggie Lover’s Lasagna – Sometimes, frozen meat can be a little scary. Avoid it altogether with Stouffer’s vegetable lasagna. This family-sized option includes a white sauce, a variety of cheeses, and several types of vegetables.
- DiGiorno Crispy Pan Pepperoni Pizza – We had to include a pizza. This one was chosen solely for its delicious, buttery crust. It certainly is not a healthy food option, but it is good!
September 12, 2020 – National Chocolate Milkshake Day
You don’t have to twist our arms, made-up holiday! The debate about who makes the best milkshake is as old as time. Some contenders:
- In-n-Out Burger – The Classic
- Shake Shack – The New Kid in Town
- Burger Patch – Dairy-free shakes from this popular midtown vegan restaurant get rave reviews.
September 18, 2020: National Cheeseburger Day
We could use a cheeseburger to wash down that shake…or something like that. Even more contentious than the battle for the best milkshake is that for Sacramento’s best burger. On the list:
- Pangaea Bier Cafe – Consistently rates at the top of “Best Burger in Sacramento” lists.
- Snug, Jr. – This midtown pop-up has only been open for a couple of months, but word is the cheeseburger is a must-have.
- South – Though famous locally for the fried chicken, many say that once they order South’s burger, they can’t bring themselves to order anything else.
And that’s it – now you can begin your Autumn diet and exercise plan on the actual first day of Fall – September 22, 2020.
Though the 2020 playlist is not yet available, get in the Autumn mood with Chillhop Essentials from Fall 2019.
