Major Injuries Suffered in Two-Vehicle Crash on I-80 Causeway
A two-vehicle crash in West Sacramento on April 30 caused major injuries to one person, who had to be airlifted to a hospital. The collision happened along westbound I-80 on the causeway around 7:31 a.m., according to the report issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). A vehicle was reported as swerving prior to the accident, crossing over from the right-hand side to the center divider.
One Injured Person Airlifted to the Hospital
One vehicle was found overturned on the right-hand side of the roadway. Three lanes of the highway were shut down, so the helicopter could land to pick up the person who had suffered major injuries. An investigation conducted by CHP Traffic is determining the cause of the two-vehicle crash.
Dangers of Causeways
One of the dangers of driving is going onto a causeway, which, by its nature, is narrow, has small shoulders and leaves little room for error. Any negligent or accidental actions along a causeway can lead to a serious traffic collision, such as speeding, distracted driving or others. Compound this with fast-moving or heavy traffic, and it’s an accident waiting to happen.
Placing a Personal Injury Claim for a Two-Vehicle Crash
If you suffered an injury in a traffic accident caused by another driver or other entity, you have the right to recover compensation. Personal injury damages that may be recovered include the following:
- Medical expenses that arise as the result of a two-vehicle crash or caused by negligence are recoverable. Depending on the type of injury, medical expenses can be high, especially if hospitalization or surgeries are involved. In addition, the ambulance fee, physicians’ bills, medication, testing and rehabilitation add to that cost.
- Wages that are lost due to the inability to go to work are recoverable. In some cases, a worker will take their vacation leave or sick time when they are injured. That can be recovered. If the injured party is self-employed or a contract worker, tax filings and other information can be used to establish their earnings.
- Taking a lower-paying position: In some cases, the worker cannot return to their previous job and has to take a lower-paying one because they can no longer perform their duties. The difference in pay is recoverable.
- Permanent disability: If someone who works becomes permanently disabled due to the negligent actions of another, they have the ability to recover their earnings until retirement age, including bonuses such as pension and insurance benefits.
- Pain and suffering compensation: Many people who are injured in a two-vehicle crash suffer physical trauma. Compensation can be recovered for that. However, psychological and emotional trauma often occurs in addition, which may also be recoverable. For example, post-traumatic stress disorder occurs in about half of all survivors of a motor vehicle accident, according to the National Institutes of Health.
