Woman Killed After Car Accident in Fresno County

A woman was killed, and several others were injured after a car accident near Kingsburg, CA, in Fresno County on the night of May 14, 2020. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on southbound Highway 99 in the vicinity of Sierra Street. An 18-year-old Ivanhoe woman reportedly lost control of her 2006 Honda and crashed into the median wall, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Two drivers, identified as a 24-year-old Visalia man and a 28-year-old Fresno man, were approaching the scene of the initial collision and were unable to avoid the woman’s vehicle. The two oncoming cars crashed into her. The drivers of the two other cars and two children sustained minor injuries after the Kingsburg crash, the CHP said. It is unknown whether they were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The Ivanhoe woman was extricated from her vehicle and transported via air ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment of catastrophic injuries. Sadly, she was pronounced deceased during hospitalization. Officials have not yet released her name due to pending notification of her family members.

Financial Compensation for Wrongful Death After a Fresno County Car Accident

An unexpected death in the family can be devastating and is nearly always life-changing on many levels. Grief over the loss of a close relative may be compounded by anger and frustration when surviving family members discover that someone else’s negligence caused the fatal accident. At the same time, survivors may find it challenging to deal with emotional and financial hardship. This is why California law provides families with the right to seek compensation from negligent drivers and their insurance companies for the following areas of loss after a wrongful death auto accident:

  • Expenses for end of life medical treatment received by the decedent before they succumbed to their injuries (these are generally recovered through a survival action)
  • Loss of the decedent’s financial contributions to the family throughout their lifetime, including future earnings, employment benefits, inheritance, and pension
  • The costs of a loved one’s funeral and burial services, which may be substantial in value
  • The affection, care, companionship, emotional support, guidance, and training the decedent would have provided throughout the remainder of their life if not for the wrongful death car accident
  • The value of household services a loved one would have contributed to the family (this can be calculated by an economist retained for the wrongful death claim)

The wrongful death claims process is often challenging to understand when coming to terms with the sudden loss of a loved one. That is why our Fresno wrongful death lawyers have compiled a brief video on this process and how it can work to help your family through this difficult time. You may view this video below:

Should You Get a Lawyer for a Wrongful Death Car Accident?

The decedent may have served a special role in the family, such as a parent or spouse, and that place can never be filled by someone else. For this reason, a family should consider taking legal action after a fatal crash that has claimed the life of a loved one. An experienced Fresno wrongful death lawyer can evaluate a case and determine whether a surviving family member is eligible to file under the California Code of Civil Procedure Section 377.60. Keep in mind that there is a two-year statute of limitations on wrongful death lawsuits, and taking quick action is essential to obtaining a sense of justice and fair compensation from negligent parties.
