Worker Critically Injured in Wood Chipper Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Napa personal injury lawyer. On Tuesday, August 15, 2017, a 24-year-old man was severely injured in Napa while he was operating a wood chipper as part of a tree-trimming project. According to medical authorities, the man was still in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon.
What Happened?
The young man, who was identified by reporters as Jeremy Booth, had been working for Gorilla Tree Service on a city project meant to improve the neighborhood surrounding Karen Drive in Napa when he was injured. Reportedly, the city contractor was working to trim and remove problematic trees from the area before repaving a section of streets in the Broadmoor neighborhood.
Witnesses indicated that the man had been working as part of a three member crew on Karen Drive between Malone and Sutro streets that had been using ropes to remove high branches from a tree.
Accident Details
Booth had reportedly been taking the branches and placing them into the woodchipper when a rope snared him and subsequently fell into the woodchipper, catching Booth by the neck and pulling him toward the dangerous machine. Reports noted that Booth lost oxygen while trying to avoid falling into the chipper. However, his co-workers were able to turn the machine off before Booth was pulled in.
Booth was immediately taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa for emergency care for life-threatening injuries. No further updates on his condition have been reported.
Our sincere best wishes go out to the injured man and his family during this difficult time.
Workplace Injuries
A workplace injury can be a devastating thing. Not only is the life and health of an individual often at stake, but being injured can mean not being able to work and putting a hold on income while trying to work through the complicated benefit system.
Although the California Worker’s Compensation System was initially written in order to prevent employees from initiating lawsuits against employers for their negligence, today there are many areas within the system that are difficult to navigate without the help of an attorney who is experienced in worker’s compensation.
Having a lawyer on your side to help you through your worker’s compensation case can help ensure that you receive the money that you are owed by law for your medical services, trauma, future loss of income, and loss of income potential.
Deadlines
Worker’s Compensation claims, especially those dealing with government entities, have specific deadlines that need to be met in order for injured workers to receive what they are owed. Calling a lawyer who knows the details of these deadlines as soon as you are able can help ensure that you don’t file your claims too long after the accident has occurred.
