Potentially Lethal Airbags Pose Danger to Motorists

Ford and Mazda have issued a critical “Do Not Drive” warning affecting more than 457,000 vehicles due to potentially lethal airbags that could explode during minor accidents or in high heat conditions, causing shrapnel that could seriously injure or kill passengers. Federal regulators announced that owners of specific Ford and Mazda models should immediately cease the operation of their vehicles, as they may contain unrecalled and unrepaired Takata airbags.

Multiple Fatalities and Injuries Lead to Do Not Drive Warning

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that approximately 67 million of these airbags have been recalled because they can rupture and send shrapnel flying upon deployment, endangering vehicle occupants. This risk is present even during minor collisions or due to aging and prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity, which has led to the do not drive warning. In the U.S., 27 fatalities and at least 400 injuries have been attributed to the destructive Takata airbags.

Older Vehicles Affected by Airbag Recall

The vehicles by the do not drive warning include Ford models manufactured between 2004 and 2014, such as Lincolns, Fusions, Mustangs, GTs, Rangers, Rangers, and Mercury Milans, encompassing around 374,290 vehicles. Mazda models produced between 2003 and 2015, including the CX-9, MPV, MazdaSpeed6, B-Series, and Mazda6, account for another 82,893 vehicles involved in the warning.

Motor Companies Advise “Do Not Drive” Until Problem Is Fixed

The NHTSA recommends that all vehicle owners verify whether their cars are subject to an open Takata airbag do not drive warning recall. If so, they should contact their local dealership to arrange a complimentary repair, including free towing and loaner vehicles. Earlier this year, Toyota and General Motors issued similar “Do Not Drive” advisories concerning the Takata airbags, impacting 61,000 older Matrix, RAV4, Corolla, and Pontiac Vibe models. Additional recalls from Nissan, BMW, and Stellantis have also addressed Takata airbag issues.

How an Injury Lawyer Can Help When You’ve Suffered Airbag Injuries

When faced with airbag injuries, seeking the expertise of an injury lawyer can be crucial in navigating the complexities of your case if you had an injury accident before the do not drive warning was issued. An experienced lawyer understands the nuances of personal injury law and can evaluate the circumstances surrounding your accident to determine if negligence was a factor. They can assist in gathering evidence, including accident reports, witness testimonies, and medical records, which are necessary to build a strong case.

Additionally, an injury lawyer can negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf, ensuring that you receive fair compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Their knowledge and advocacy can provide peace of mind during a challenging time, allowing you to focus on your recovery.

Personal injury lawyer Ed Smith emphasizes that choosing an accident attorney requires considering several key qualities:
