Car Seats Recalled Over Safety Issues
Car seats are essential to keeping our children safe while on the road. They are designed to protect young passengers in the event of a car accident, but if a car seat is defective, it can increase the risk of serious injury or even death. That’s why it’s crucial to stay informed about any recalls that may affect the car seat you are using for your child.
The Dorel Juvenile Group recently announced a recall of approximately 60,000 rear-facing child car seats due to safety issues. The seat restraints were manufactured between May 2020 and February 2023. They are being recalled because the restraint base may not adequately secure the car seat to the vehicle, which can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Recalled Car Seat Brands and Models
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the self-retracting lower anchor systems of the recalled child seat models fail to comply with federal safety standards.
They include the following Maxi Cosi and Safety 1st models:

- Coral Xp Car Seat
- IC336 Mico Xp Max Infant Car Seat
- IC337 Mico Xp Max Infant Car Seat
- IC338 Mico Xp Max Infant Car Seat

- Onboard 35 Securetech Car Seat
- Securetech Infant Car Seat Base
The following Maxi Cosi models were purchased together with a stroller as part of a travel system:

If you are a parent or caregiver who owns one of these car seats, following the manufacturer’s instructions for remedying the issue is essential. Dorel has stated that consumers can continue to use the car seats with the base installed using the vehicle seat belt until the faulty bases are replaced.
Dorel will issue a free replacement base to customers, and notifications will be sent by April 7th. It is essential to act quickly to ensure your child’s safety while traveling in a car. You may register your car seat at safety1st.com or maxicosi.com.
Meeting Safety Standards
Many child passenger injuries and deaths in California are considered preventable. While motorists share in the responsibility for safe driving behavior, parents need to place their children in appropriately-sized car seats and booster seats.
Choosing a seat that meets safety standards and using it properly every time you travel with your child is essential. Ensuring the seat is installed correctly in your vehicle is also important. If you’re unsure how to install your car seat correctly, many local fire departments or police stations offer free car seat installation inspections.

Dangers of Defective Products
Defective products can be dangerous, and it is crucial to understand the risks associated with using them. In the case of the Dorel Juvenile Group recall, the faulty seat anchors could cause the car seat to move or detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or death.
Unfortunately, not all defective products are discovered before they are sold to consumers. That’s why staying informed about any recalls affecting your products is important. You can often find information about recalls on the manufacturer’s website or the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) site. It’s also a good idea to register your product with the manufacturer so that you can be notified of any recalls that may affect it.
