Farmers Market Week Begins August 1st

The 22nd Annual National Farmers Market Week starts this weekend. It runs from August 1st through the 7th. Farmers markets across the country saw surges in attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were able to remain open because they are essential businesses. Farmers markets demonstrated their resilience on a national level as well as their importance to local communities.

The Message of Farmers Market Week 2021

This year, the founders of Farmers Market Week want to promote the following points:

  • Farmers markets are essential.
  • Operators of farmers markets worked diligently through the pandemic to create safety plans and redesign market operations so they could continue to serve local communities. The pandemic spotlighted how local food systems with short supply chains can quickly respond and make adaptations.
  • Farmers markets are hubs for the local community.
  • Farmers markets facilitate relationships between members of the community and farmers. This can help build a more sustainable and fair food system.
  • The farmers market culture is changing.
  • Farmers market demographics have not always reflected the local community. Some markets failed to create a space where everyone felt welcome. There is work being done to change that and to make markets inviting, safe, and accessible for all. The fundamental belief is that farmers markets are for everyone.

 Visit the Davis Farmers Market

One of the best things about living in Northern California, known as the salad bowl of the United States, is the year-round availability of fresh fruits and vegetables. Every day of the week, there are Certified Farmer’s Markets within a short drive. The city of Davis has a stellar selection of local agriculture at their markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Head Out to Central Park

On Saturdays from 8:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m., Central Park in downtown Davis is the setting where thousands of people gather to buy locally grown and raised produce. The markets are open year-round, rain or shine.

What You May Find at the Market

The stalls of the Davis Farmers Market are filled with a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, including certified organic produce. Also for sale, you will find seafood, chicken, local eggs, local honey, and wine. That’s not all – other vendors offer fresh-baked bread and pastry items, nuts, cheese, flowers, and gifts.

Some of the specialty items you may encounter include gluten-free donuts, vegan chocolates, and kettle corn.

Each week, several food vendors representing a wide variety of international cuisines visit the Wednesday market, making it convenient for you to pick up dinner after shopping for your weekly produce. Take the meal home or lay a blanket on the grass and enjoy a picnic.

Some of the recent highlights at the market include:

  • Five colors of carrots offered by Patrick’s Garden
  • Bunches of grapes from Capay Canyon Ranch
  • Pluots
  • Peaches
  • Apple juice from Ratzlaff Ranch
  • Summer vegetables from Busalacchi Farm
