Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Brentwood
The new year is coming up quickly, and officials at the Brentwood Police Department want their community to have a safe celebration. They want to remind all Brentwood residents of the severe dangers of using fireworks and firearms on this worldwide celebrated holiday. Additionally, Brentwood police want to offer residents safety tips that guarantee a night of fun and self-protection. Read below for safety tips regarding fireworks, gunfire, pets, and partying. Having fun while being responsible has never been made so easy.
Fireworks
- All of Contra Costa County is a firework-free zone, including Brentwood. The use or possession of all sizes and types of fireworks is banned by law. Possession of illegal fireworks that leave the ground or explode could constitute a felony charge, plus a maximum fine of $5,000 and imprisonment. Annual statistics prove that the illegal use of fireworks and celebratory gunfire causes serious injuries to thousands yearly.
Gunfire
- Shooting a firearm in the open air is against the law. Not only will those bullets return to the ground at some point, but bullets can rapidly descend at a rate of 300 – 400 feet per second. This poses a severe danger to residents and surrounding properties because bullets have the potential to penetrate roofs and cause damage to any tenants or property. It is also important to remember that most of California is fire-damaged and has drought-related conditions, which create extreme safety concerns. Dried-out lawns and high weeds are incredibly susceptible to stray sparks or embers from fireworks.
Pets
- Pets are very sensitive to sudden loud noises like gunfire or fireworks. Please keep any pets you may have indoors, away from the loud noises. Finding a quiet room to keep them in during this time is best. Ensure all gate latches and fences are secured to guarantee your pet will not run away. You may also consider getting a microchip for any of your pets.
Going out
- Avoid drinking and driving. If you plan on traveling while intoxicated, find a designated driver. Fully charge your phone before going out to call a family member or friend, a taxi cab, or use a transportation app such as Uber. If someone you’re with is drunk and planning to get in the car, take his or her keys. New Year’s Eve is a dangerous time to be on the road for anyone, so stay alert and watch out for drunk motorists.
