Small Town Offers Big Things
Have you ever been to a small town and thought, “Wow, this place is awesome?” For many people, that town is Colusa.
Colusa may not be the first place you think of when it comes to tourist destinations. It’s not even as popular as the other California cities, but don’t let this small town fool you. Colusa is a beautiful up and coming locale that’s worth a visit. You’ll be amazed by some of the exciting places you can explore and things to do at this hidden gem.
If you are traveling to Sacramento or just passing through, plan to spend a few hours in Colusa. Below are a few things you can do in and around Colusa. We have a feeling that if you include Colusa in your travel plans, you will be happy you did so.
Colusa National Wildlife Refuge
Colusa National Wildlife Refuge is a magnificent destination for bird and nature lovers. It consists of over 5,000 acres of wetlands with some riparian and grasslands.
Established in 1945, the refuge is a resting ground for migratory birds such as ducks, geese, and shorebirds when they fly along the Pacific Flyway. Thousands of birds can be seen from September through March. If you visit early in the morning, you can see the geese fly out to feed in the surrounding grain fields. You can see them fly back to the ponds in the late afternoon where they typically spend the night safe from predators.
The peak populations happen between December and January. During these months, more than 75,000 geese and 200,000 ducks can be seen throughout the refuge. The best time to visit is from mid-November to mid-February. It can be pretty crowded in the wintertime. If you miss the prime bird time, there is always something to see year-round.

Grand Island Shrine
Whether you are religious or have spiritual beliefs, you’ll be amazed to see the Grand Island Shrine. Located at State Route 45 between Earp and Buster Roads, this tiny church is out in the middle of farmlands and fits about 10 people.
Listed as a historic place on the National Register, the little pink structure marks the place for Colusa County’s first Catholic Mass that took place in 1856. The shrine was built in 1883 and has a plaque on the front that reads “Little Shrine, Site of First Catholic Mass 1856.” Pilgrimages, visits, and masses have been made to the site since 1864.
It is a must-see destination for those seeking peace and tranquility.
Colusa Casino Resort
If you’re feeling lucky, then you may want to check out Colusa Casino Resort. One of Colusa’s main attractions, the casino is just a short drive up Interstate 5 and is one of Sacramento’s favorite entertainment and gaming destinations. It’s a smaller casino but features a wide selection of slot machines, game tables, and the highest Bingo payouts in town.
If you’re not a gambler, you can still enjoy the atmosphere, the food, and the relaxation the resort has to offer.
If you enjoy outdoor fun, you’ll want to check out the casino’s Outdoor Adventures, an exclusive guide service that offers full-service hunting and fishing trips.
