Crash Kills Chico Man

A man from Chico was involved in a fatal head-on collision in the region of Forest Ranch.

What Happened?

The collision occurred in Forest Ranch at the milepost 30 location at approximately 4:30 pm on Friday, August 5, 2016. The motorist of the 1974 Dodge van was driving on Highway 32 east where the van came into contact with a pickup that drove into oncoming traffic. The pickup veered into the lane of the van where the pickup struck the front end of the van.

Auto Crash Aftermath

The motorist of the 1974 Dodge van that passed away from the crash was identified by the Butte County Coroner’s Office as Alan Miegs, 72, of Chico. The driver of the pickup was identified as 25 year old Jordan Smead, from Chico. Smead was transported to Enloe Medical Center located in Chico to be treated for moderate injuries. Twenty-one-year-old Janessa Morales, also from Chico, was a passenger in the pickup where she sustained major injuries and was also transported to Enloe. Javier Ramirez, 27, of San Jose, sought his own medical attention elsewhere.

Memorial For Chico Man

Alan Meigs was the owner of the Iron Mountain Leather store located at 804 Broadway Street in Chico. The leather store displayed a memorial note for the memory and honor of Meigs. Meigs was also a musician and member of the Retrotones band. A memorial post on Facebook recognized Meigs as a “Chico legend” and spread the news of the passing of Meigs on Saturday, August 6, 2016.

California Highway Patrol Reports

The California Highway Patrol reports that the cause of the collision still remains unknown. Authorities state that neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be contributing factors in the auto accident.

Sometimes police reports can be inconclusive or in error. It is crucial to have an experienced accident attorney performing an independent investigation into the sequence of events leading up the crash. A good attorney will preserve evidence, gather witness statements and even reconstruct the accident scene to determine fault. An attorney will also help recover compensation for serious injuries and wrongful death.
