Solano County Celebrates Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week will be celebrated in Solano County on August 1-7, 2016.  The week activities will not only give families an opportunity to participate in numerous activities that are centered on themes such as nutrition, environment and safety, health and well-being, and safety, but the annual festivities will also raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding both the infant and the community as a whole.

The week-long event is organized and administered by the Solano County Department of Health and Social Services. Dixon families are encouraged to attend the community health fair in Vallejo, California on August 7 at the J.F.K. Public Library. This community health fair will be a culminating celebration to the week and will be hosted by Solano County Breastfeeding Coalition, Solano County WIC Program, Touro University California, and A More Excellent Way Program.

The theme of the week-long celebration of breastfeeding families is, “Breastfeeding: A Key to Sustainable Development.” After much consideration and collaboration, this theme emerged as most fitting as it ties the importance of breastfeeding to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals that seek to end poverty, promote well-being and property for all people, and protect the earth.

Linking Benefits of Breastfeeding

Those involved in putting on the event have the difficult task of linking the benefits of breastfeeding to the ambitious goals of ending poverty, among the other stated goals. However, those on the front lines are clear about the many benefits of breastfeeding and the far-reaching positive effects that breastfeeding can have on the global community.  For example, the Lactation Educator and Counselor for the Solano County WIC Program has been a vocal advocate for the cause.  She states, “Breastmilk provides excellent nutrition to babies, promotes long-term health and well-being, and reduces water usage and waste. It’s really the complete package.” Many others share the same sentiment and go even further in describing the pervasive affect breastfeeding can have on society as a whole.

The overall goal of World Breastfeeding week can be said to highlight the 5 most important areas of development:

1. Nutrition and Food Safety

2. Productive Work Force

3. Well-being and Health

4. Safety and Environment

5. Long-term good health

At the culminating health fair, families will be able to participate in various activities that not only educate but entertain them in a safe and healthy environment.  Furthermore, participating families will obtain healthy ideas for stacks, receive information regarding breastfeeding and employment, receive free fresh produce, get a free health screen, and learn about environmentally free cleaning products.
