Drunk Driving Accident Fatally Injures Woman Near Merced County

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced wrongful death lawyer. A car accident near Merced County was allegedly caused by an intoxicated motorist on the morning of Monday, November 20, 2017. Unfortunately, the accident claimed the life of a Berkeley woman.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the woman that passed away in this senseless, tragic accident.

What Happened?

A 2017 Toyota was involved in an initial collision with a guardrail along the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Henry Miller Road at approximately 12:35 am. The Toyota was stopped in the No.1 lane of Interstate 5 and was facing north after the impact. At the same time, a Rancho Cordova man was behind the wheel of his 2014 Lincoln traveling southbound along Interstate 5. The Lincoln was traveling in No. 1 lane at an unknown speed and collided with the front-end of the Toyota. The Lincoln continued and came to a rest along the dirt shoulder of the roadway.

Nature of Injuries

The motorist of the Toyota suffered minor injuries as a result of the car accident. It is not yet known whether he was hospitalized for his injuries. The man driving the Lincoln suffered major injuries and was transported to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. The passenger of the Toyota, sadly, succumbed to their injuries as a result of the second collision.

Identity of Victim Unknown

The identity of the victim has not yet been released by the Merced County Coroner’s Office.

What Caused the Accident?

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) revealed that the driver of the 2014 Lincoln, 50-year-old Johnny Lee of Rancho Cordova, was Driving Under the Influence (DUI) moments before the collision. Accident reports indicated that Lee’s level of intoxication and speed was unsafe for road conditions ahead of his vehicle. He was evidently arrested on charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. He may face more charges as the investigation continues.

Coping With Grief After a Wrongful Death

Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be one of the most difficult situations a person can experience in life. The grieving process after a wrongful death varies in nature from person-to-person. All feelings and emotions are valid during this period. It is perfectly normal to feel frustrated, disappointed, angry or depressed after losing your loved one. Taking care of yourself and your well-being is critical in the grieving process. Maintaining a balanced diet and exercise routine is beneficial for mental and physical health. Create a support group of friends and family and avoid keeping your emotions inside as it may cause more harm than good.
