DUI Suspected in Fresno County Accident
A wrong-way driver was arrested on the night of March 9 after reportedly crashing his vehicle into three others along Highway 180 and attempting to flee the scene. At approximately 8:30 p.m., the motorist was allegedly driving under the influence when he veered over the center median and drove westbound along the eastbound lanes of the highway near Academy Avenue. After striking three oncoming cars, the driver fled the scene. However, officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) were able to catch up with the suspect a mile away. The driver, identified as a man in his 30s, was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run and felony DUI. People in the other cars hit by the man suffered moderate injuries. It is unknown whether these parties were hospitalized for their injuries.
Common Injuries in a Drunk Driving Accident
Injuries in a drunk driving accident often tend to be more severe than in other car accidents. This is due to impaired motorists losing control of their cars leading to rollover accidents and head-on collisions. Some of the most common injuries suffered in these car wrecks include brain injuries, bone fractures, cervical sprain, spinal cord injuries, and internal trauma.
What Damages May Be Recovered in a DUI Accident?
Serious injuries from a DUI accident not only require extensive medical treatment, but they can also cause you to miss time from work. In some cases, people may be unable to work the same job they once did or unable to work at all due to a permanent disability. Medical expenses, wage loss, and other expenses can mount quickly, leaving an injured party and their family in a financial predicament. An experienced Fresno personal injury attorney can help in these situations by holding the impaired motorist accountable for all of your losses including reimbursement for medical bills, lost wages, disfigurement, loss of consortium, and other accident-related expenses. Punitive damages may also be sought from the drunk driver to punish him or her for the egregious act and deter them from repeating similar behavior.
Is There Enough Insurance?
One of the critical factors in every multi-vehicle accident is whether there is enough insurance to pay for all losses. One of the ways for people to ensure that they have enough insurance in an accident is to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist protection (UM/UIM) on their car insurance policy. This type of coverage provides benefits when the driver responsible for the car wreck lacks insurance, or the damages exceed the policy limits of the at-fault driver’s insurance. Conversely, those injured in a hit and run accident may also be able to use their UM/UIM coverage. To learn about the four types of insurance available after an accident, watch the below video.
Why You Should Consult a Fresno Personal Injury Attorney Following a DUI Accident
Many factors may be involved in a drunk driving accident. Handling these types of cases on your own is not advisable as other parties may also be responsible. These include people not involved in the accident such as a business for supplying liquor to a motorist or the owner of the vehicle that the impaired driver was using. An experienced personal injury lawyer in Fresno can conduct their own investigation into the cause of the collision to identify all responsible parties and properly determine fault. This way, the injury lawyer can build a strong case for fair compensation of damages incurred. As in the above incident, if the motorist is convicted of DUI, and that can be proven as the cause of the collision, this can help establish the injured person’s right to financial compensation.
