East Sacramento Train Accident

I’m Ed Smith, an East Sacramento personal injury attorney. A man tragically died on his birthday after being struck by a passenger train in East Sacramento on Wednesday, August 24, 2016.

What Happened?

Twenty-seven-year-old, Erik Castillo, of Sacramento was struck by an Amtrak train on tracks that run along the southwestern perimeter of the Sacramento State campus. The area is located in the vicinity of Elvas Avenue and Folsom Boulevard.

Man Pronounced Deceased at Scene

The incident happened around 11:00 a.m. Sadly, Castillo was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. Officials of the Union Pacific Railroad, who owns the tracks, will conduct their own investigation into the man’s death.

Similar Tragedy in 2012

A school teacher from St. Francis High School, 52-year-old, Kathy Carlisle, was also hit by a train in the same general vicinity where Castillo passed away. Sacramento police indicated Carlisle was taking pictures of an oncoming train near Elvas and 65th Street when she was struck from behind by an oncoming train travelling in the opposite direction.

Former Student of Math & Applied Computing

The Sacramento Bee reported that Castillo had worked his way through to a senior level of study at Sacramento State. He was majoring in Applied Computing and Mathematics. He last attended school at the campus in 2015 and had not yet earned a degree.

Castillo Graduated from Florin High and Had Professional Ties to Elk Grove

Mr. Castillo was a native of Los Angeles. He was a Florin High School graduate. He worked at a school program called START at Peter Burnett Elementary in Sacramento. Prior to that he was a tutor at Mathnasium Learning Center in the city of Elk Grove.

People that knew and loved Castillo described him as a math-genius that had a passion for helping others.

We send our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Castillo.

Conducting Independent Investigations

Pedestrians and/or bystanders can slip and fall in and around passenger trains and become crushed. Any lawsuit involving a railroad or train requires an experienced personal injury attorney. Conducting an independent investigation is the first step in determining liability.
