Investigating a Major Accident
Many factors go into a major accident that might affect your ability to collect the personal injury damages that you deserve. This is why it is so important to have an experienced lawyer to represent you. A proper investigation and the gathering of evidence are vital. Following are some of the areas in which our experienced investigators work to support your claim:
- Accident reconstruction is performed. This determines how the major accident occurred, where the vehicles collided and their position after the crash. It can also point out driving errors in some cases.
- Investigators review the police report to ensure it has no mistakes in it, and witnesses are interviewed. In some cases, a witness to the major accident may have filmed it on their cell phone.
- The investigators comb the area of the major accident for surveillance cameras. These may be found on traffic lights or even at businesses that are located nearby.
- Maintenance negligence by the government entity in charge is examined. Poorly marked roadways, narrow lanes and badly designed exit ramps can lead to a collision involving multiple vehicles. The entity in charge can be held liable for accident injuries that occur.
Once the evidence is gathered, our lawyers take over to build a case that supports our client’s compensation claim. It can be used either when working with the insurance company or presented in a civil court case.
Causes of a Multiple-Vehicle Accident
A multiple-vehicle collision can happen anywhere, but they are more common along highways. Because vehicles are traveling at higher speeds and traffic is more congested, it is more likely to result in serious injuries or fatalities. Some common causes of a major accident include:
- The traffic experiences a sudden slowdown.
- One driver is distracted by texting, talking on a cell phone or for other reasons. The driver drifts into another lane or crashes into the vehicle in front, not realizing that motorist has slowed down.
- A drunk driver is on the roadway and has trouble judging vehicle distance and speed. Because the drunk driver has poor judgment and his/her vision and reaction time is affected, they cause a major collision.
- Accidents often occur near exit and entrance ramps on the highway and are caused by improper merging. Some motorists may cut off another vehicle to reach an exit. In other cases, a driver may prevent another motorist from merging.
- Speeding is a major cause of accidents involving multiple vehicles.
