Fairfield Fatal Accidents

I’m Ed Smith, a Fairfield wrongful death lawyer. Car accidents happen every day. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that an average of about 6 million car accidents occur in the U.S. every year and an average of over 30,000 of those accidents involve fatal injuries.

Fatal accidents can happen anywhere and vary widely as far as crash conditions, injuries sustained, and other factors. As with most places, Fairfield has seen a number of fatal collisions in recent years. Statistics and information regarding these accidents is available below.

Severity of Collisions in Fairfield

Fairfield was the site of 4,148 total injury-causing car accidents from the beginning of 2010 until the end of 2016. The large majority of these accidents (68 percent) involved only complaints of pain. After complaints of pain, non-severe visible injuries accounted for 25.43 percent of injury collisions, severe injuries accounted for 4.48 percent, and fatal injuries accounted for 1.13 percent at a total of 47 fatal accidents.

Fairfield’s ratio of fatal accidents against other injury collisions is significantly lower than the ratio of the county as a whole, for which 202 fatal accidents accounted for 1.89 percent of a total of 10,683 collisions that occurred during the same period of time.

Fatal Accidents by Type

Fatal accidents in Fairfield over the last eight years have been primarily caused by two types of collisions. The first and most frequent type is hit-object accidents, which caused 14 (30 percent) of fatal injury crashes. The second most fatal accident type is vehicle/pedestrian collisions, which caused 10 (22 percent).

After these two, the most frequent type of accidents in which people sustained fatal trauma were head-on crashes at 13 percent of fatality crashes, broadside accidents at 11 percent, and rear-end accidents also at 11 percent.

Most Common Fatal Violations

Violating the rules of the road always increases the risk of a vehicle accident. Even if somebody thinks they can safely speed or run a red light, driving against traffic laws means that other drivers can’t safely predict what the errant driver will do and is less capable of avoiding a collision.

The most common type of traffic law violation to cause fatal injury accidents in Fairfield during 2010-2016 has been speed limit violations. Speeding drivers caused 36 percent of Fairfield’s auto accident fatalities during this period and at 17 total collisions, was almost twice as common than the next-most fatal traffic violation, DUI.

Wrongful Death

When a negligent driver causes an accident, they can be held liable to pay for the losses they caused and when those losses include the loss of a loved one, individuals can often recover for a wide variety of damages that include loss of consortium, loss of income, funeral expenses, and more.
