The Danger of Intersections for Motorcyclists
Many motorcycle accidents happen at intersections. They are some of the most dangerous areas to ride. Here are some safety tips for riders navigating intersections:
- Move your bike within your lane. The number one rule is to never assume that a driver sees you. For whatever reason, motorcycles sometimes do not register in the consciousness of other motorists. There is also the phenomenon of motion blindness in which objects can disappear in the context of moving traffic. Other drivers may have difficulty judging how close a motorcycle is and how fast it is approaching. By moving across your lane of travel, it may help to ensure that other drivers “see” you. If it is safe to do so, weaving a couple times back and forth within your lane may draw attention to your bike.
- Be visible. Along the same lines, choose a position within your lane that places you in open view of other motorists. Don’t tailgate the vehicle in front of you, or remain in blind spots.
- Wear bright colors. Brightly colored gear can draw drivers’ attention and give you some insurance that you won’t fade into the background. Wearing reflective materials when riding in low light conditions is also smart.
- Stay ready. Even when you do your best to remain visible and ride defensively, there will likely be motorists who do not respect your right-of-way and you need to stay mentally prepared for that probability. Approach other vehicles cautiously and be ready to safely maneuver away from dangerous moves. Actively look for potential hazards and trouble ahead. Slow down and cover your brakes as you approach an intersection, even if it appears that your path is clear.
