Fatal Crash Near Auburn Kills Two
Hi I’m Ed Smith, an Auburn Auto Accident Attorney. Two Santa Cruz natives, Jeremy Hills, 24, and Kaitlin Bowker, 20, were killed in a collision after a Toyota 4 Runner they were passengers in went over Interstate 80 and into nearby train tracks.
What Happened?
The driver, Anthony Costello, 21, was air lifted to Sutter Roseville Hospital and is still in critical condition as of Wednesday morning. Costello was driving in the fast lane at 65-70 mph when the truck began to travel past the shoulder and off the road.
After crashing into a guard rail, the truck flipped over and hit the tracks below the freeway, where it caught fire. Hills and Bowker, who were passengers in the vehicle, died at the scene.
Where Did The Accident Occur?
The crash took place around 6 p.m. in Alta, west of Crystal Springs Road.
California Highway Patrol Statements
According to California Highway Patrol, (CHP) the cause of the accident is still unknown. The roads were clear and dry at the time of the crash.
A responding officer from Gold Run CHP, Sgt. Dave Brown says “It is a downhill grade there,” “But there’s no more crashes there than in other areas nearby.”
A CHP dispatcher said several witnesses tried to assist, with people running across the freeway to offer help.
