City Government Continues to Improve Antioch Roads
The city of Antioch is beginning the 8th phase of its roadway rehabilitation effort, focusing on roads in the downtown area. The city hopes that by rehabilitating its roadways, it will be able to reduce the wear and tear on vehicles as well as the number of serious accidents that take place on city streets.
The Project
The project is being funded by a one-million-dollar federal grant from a long-running program instituted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program, called the Community Development Block Grant, gives communities the funds they need to provide infrastructure development as well as anti-poverty programs and affordable housing.
Antioch is using the grant to rehabilitate its roadways as well as replace damaged curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. Funds will also go to installing curb ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The city has stated that, through this effort, they are seeking to continue their commitment to strengthening the quality of life for residents of Antioch.
Improving the City
The construction work necessary to complete the project will reportedly have a minor impact on local vehicle and pedestrian traffic. However, once the construction is completed, the city expects to see traffic relief as well as new and safer roads. The project is projected to be completely finished by the end of March 2020.
Ron Bernal, the Antioch City Manager, told reporters that by upgrading their roads, the city hopes to show its residents that they are “working hard for them.” Bernal went on to mention that “whether its upgrading roads or keeping the water rates reasonable, Antioch is focused on making residents proud to call it their home.”
Unsafe Roads and Vehicle Accidents
When roads have large potholes, missing signs, or other serious defects, it puts drivers at risk. Maneuvering around a pothole or failing to anticipate a sudden curve can cause vehicles to crash, potentially leaving drivers and passengers with serious injuries.
In cases where a poorly maintained road contributes to a crash, the government entity responsible for that roadway is often considered at-fault and can be held financially responsible for damages suffered as a result of the accident.
