A Case Report: Femoral Artery Transection
Recently, a case report was published discussing someone who had sustained a serious injury in a bicycle accident. A young man was riding his bike down the road when he was involved in a crash with a motor vehicle. He flipped over his handlebars and landed on the pavement, suffering serious injuries. He was dazed and confused. Very quickly, a large bruise had developed on the inside of his right leg. He started to feel light-headed, and when EMS arrived, they were concerned that he had suffered a serious internal injury. He was given an IV bag of fluids and transported to a nearby hospital.
Emergent Treatment of a Ruptured Artery
If someone has ruptured his or her femoral artery in a bicycle accident, the treatment focuses on stabilizing the individual and stopping the bleeding as quickly as possible. On arrival, imaging scans were completed which demonstrated that he had sustained a cut along his left femoral artery. He was taken to an operating room so that the bleeding could be stopped as quickly as possible. He required a blood transfusion to replace some of the blood that he had lost in the accident. The laceration along the femoral artery was repaired, and the bleeding eventually stopped. He recovered and was discharged after a few days in the hospital.
