Elkhorn Boulevard Intersection Site of Violent Traffic Accident

A violent traffic accident in Sacramento on August 8 ended up with one vehicle piled on top of the other. Then they caught on fire. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the accident happened around 10:10 in the evening at the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Butterball Way between a pickup and a sedan.

Accident Being Investigated to Determine Cause

Emergency responders were called to the scene to assess possible injuries. It was reported that the collision was so violent that the engine of one of the vehicles was laying in the street on fire, as well as the piled vehicles. The traffic accident is being investigated by the CHP to find out how it occurred and to place fault. At the time this report was issued, no data had been released on whether injuries occurred as a result of the accident or how serious they were.

What to Do in the Event of a Car Fire

When flames or smoke suddenly appear in your car, knowing what to do can potentially save lives and prevent serious burn injuries. Not all fires in cars begin in the engine. Some occur near the brakes, wheels, underneath, or even in the dash or interior. The following recommendations are offered by the National Fire Protection Association Council:

  • Signal, pull off, and stop your vehicle, turning off the ignition.
  • Tell everyone to get out. Never go back for forgotten items, including your registration or other documents, in the glove compartment.
  • Shut the doors if possible and move safely back – at least 100 feet – from the smoking or burning vehicle. Warn any bystanders to stay well back also.
  • Phone the Fire Department at 911, and tell them your location.
  • Don’t attempt to put out the fire yourself.
  • Alert approaching traffic if possible without placing yourself in danger.

Intersection Traffic Accidents

The magnitude of a traffic accident can be influenced by where the vehicles struck each other, speed and other factors. A driver who is speeding, of course, will cause more serious injuries and risk of fatalities if they strike another vehicle. Speeding isn’t the only cause of a serious traffic accident. They can also result from the following:

  • Distracted drivers cause many serious traffic accidents every year. From drifting over the line on a rural road to rear-end crashes and T-bone accidents, distracted drivers don’t seem to realize that taking their eyes from the roadway ahead for just a few seconds can have a disastrous result.
  • Drunk drivers are a menace on the roadway, especially since they don’t seem to realize they can’t handle a vehicle in their condition. The drunk driver weaves all over the road, cannot judge the distance from other vehicles and has poor judgment and reflexes. These deficits make it easy for them to cause a traffic accident.
  • Ignoring traffic laws often leads to a collision. Those who drive recklessly or aggressively can cause a traffic accident. From running a stoplight to tailgating, crowding other motorists, or racing another vehicle, it can quickly turn bad when an accident occurs.
  • Fatigued drivers have been compared to those who are inebriated in their ability to handle a vehicle. The fatigued driver might nod off behind the wheel, drift over the centerline, or cause a rear-end collision.
