Five Car Accident at Highway 4 Near Pittsburg
I’m Ed Smith, a Pittsburg Personal Injury Lawyer. Five vehicles were involved in a car accident along the westbound side of Highway 4 near Pittsburg on July 18, 2018. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), two parties were hospitalized for their injuries. The accident took place around 12:30 p.m. about halfway between the Bailey Road and Railroad Avenue exits. The five cars involved in the crash included a Lexus, Kia, Jeep, Nissan, and Infiniti. Preliminary reports suggested that the Nissan was the first car involved the chain reaction accident, which struck another vehicle before crashing into the other three involved. CHP investigators believe that speeding might have been a contributing factor to the collision.
Emergency Response
Two victims required immediate medical attention following the car accident, including one male occupant of the Jeep and one female occupant of the Infiniti. Both were transferred to a nearby hospital via ambulance. According to Officer Brandon Correia, a CHP spokesman, both victims had minor injuries and are expected to survive.
Highway Closure
The collision initially blocked all four lanes of Highway 4, and CHP issued a traffic alert for heavy traffic approximately ten minutes afterward. By 12:45 p.m., three of the four traffic lanes had been cleared. The remaining lane was not reopened until 2:25 p.m. The traffic alert was lifted shortly after all four lanes were open to drivers, which impacted traffic for about 2 hours in total.
Increase in Traffic Jams Caused by Auto Accidents
Motorists are impacted more by traffic accidents today than they were a decade ago. For example, over the last 10 years, there has been a 25 percent increase in the number of traffic jams caused by auto accidents. Collisions are also impacting the duration of traffic jams; for every hour spent in heavy traffic, roughly 18 minutes are due to a crash. This is an alarmingly high number when compared to 2006 when accidents only made up about 10 minutes of one hour in traffic. Since traffic accidents impact everyone in California, recognizing any reckless driving habits you have and how to correct them is crucial to making the roads a safer place for you and everyone else.
