Four Taken to Hospital After Truck Crash in Modesto
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that four parties were taken to the hospital after a truck crash near Modesto on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 28, 2020. Preliminary reports suggested that the motor vehicle accident occurred around 1:40 p.m. at Claratina and Oakdale roads close to the northeast corner of Modesto. Two cars and a big rig were involved, and wreckage from the truck accident was found in an orchard. According to an incident summary by the battalion chief of the Modesto Fire Department, one party was trapped inside a vehicle. Emergency crews were prompted to use hydraulic extrication tools to remove the patient. A total of four people were taken to local hospitals for the treatment of moderate to serious injuries. Updates regarding the trucking collision have not yet been released by officials.
Why Are Truck Collisions Different than Car Accidents?
Injury crashes involving large commercial trucks are often serious in nature due to the overwhelming weight and size of these vehicles. Big rigs, which often weigh up to 80,000 pounds and are taller with higher ground clearance, can cause smaller cars to underride semi-trucks in collisions. Since the injuries and damages are often severe, liability for the injury incident is often disputed by multiple parties. These include the insurance company representing the negligent truck driver and trucking firm, manufacturer of the big rig, and the shipper of the cargo, to name a few. The number of potential defendants, or parties responsible for the trucking collision, alone adds challenges to a case that requires the assistance of an experienced injury lawyer. Types of Damages Recoverable in Truck Accident Cases
Bringing an injury case for a semi-truck accident can be challenging. However, it is often the only way to seek a financial recovery for the financial burden and intangible harm that a person has suffered as a result of someone else’s carelessness or negligence. The types of personal injury damages in a truck accident case generally include:
- Past and future medical treatment and expenses
- Lost wages for time missed at work as a result of truck accident-related injuries
- Loss of consortium may be claimed by an uninjured spouse for the damage a truck accident has caused upon a marital relationship
- Loss of future earning potential as a result of a permanent physical injury suffered in a big rig crash
- Non-economic losses for the lasting effects of a personal injury such as pain and suffering, emotional trauma, permanent disability, diminished quality of life, and more
