Fresno Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident Fatally Injures Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. A pedestrian accident occurred in southeast Fresno during the evening hours of Wednesday, September 27, 2017. The driver involved in the accident initially stopped but then fled the scene. He left the pedestrian alone at the scene suffering from serious injuries. Sadly, the injured pedestrian later died at a local hospital.

Our sincerest thoughts and condolences are with the loved ones of the individual who passed away in this tragic pedestrian accident.

What Happened?

A woman was crossing the street in the intersection of Butler Avenue and Winery Avenue shortly after 6:00 pm. An oncoming vehicle was approaching the intersection and collided with the woman. The driver of the vehicle initially stopped following the collision, however, they fled the scene shortly afterward.

Was the Pedestrian Okay?

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene of the pedestrian accident. When they arrived, they conducted a medical evaluation on the woman. She appeared to have suffered major injuries and was immediately transported to a hospital. Sadly, she later succumbed to her injuries during hospitalization. Her identity has not yet been released due to pending notification of next-of-kin.

What Caused the Pedestrian Accident?

The cause of the pedestrian accident is still under investigation. Traffic Collision Reports are generally processed within one to two weeks from the date of the accident. Reports indicated that authorities later tracked down the hit-and-run driver involved in the pedestrian accident. The motorist was identified as 50-year-old Fermin Castellanos. He was been charged with vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of a collision causing injury. The suspect vehicle has been taken into custody by investigators. The suspect may face more charges as the pedestrian accident investigation continues.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 129,000 pedestrians were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries and 5,376 pedestrians were fatally injured in traffic accidents in 2015 alone. Pedestrians are 1.5 times more susceptible to suffer fatal injuries in a car accident when compared to vehicle occupants. The reason being, is a pedestrian has no way of protecting themselves from an oncoming vehicle.
