Twin Cities Road Location of Head-On Collision

A head-on collision near Courtland in Sacramento County on August 15 caused major injuries to at least one person. The accident happened along Twin Cities Road just east of River Road at about noon when a Honda Element and Ford F-150 collided head-on. Officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that multiple people stopped with their vehicles to try and assist the injured, which left the roadway partially blocked. One person was transported to a hospital with major injuries. The CHP will be conducting an investigation into the head-on collision to find out why it occurred.

Causes of a Head-On Collision

A head-on accident doesn’t occur very often but results in severe injuries when it does. This happens because the speeds of both vehicles combine to produce the impact in the crash. There are a number of reasons a head-on collision happens, including the following:

  • Improper passing: On two-lane roads, a head-on crash often happens because of improper passing. The driver may be behind a slower vehicle and become impatient even though they don’t have a clear view of oncoming traffic. This negligent action often causes a head-on crash.
  • Driving the wrong way on a highway: Most of these accidents are caused by drunk drivers, although those who are elderly may mistake an exit ramp for an entrance ramp.
  • Speeding: Speeding around a curve can lead to a head-on collision when a driver begins to lose control and overcorrects.
  • Inebriated driving: Drunk driving can lead to a head-on crash because the inebriated motorist has problems staying in their lane.
  • Driving when too tired: Fatigued driving can affect a motorist the same way it does a drunk driver. The driver who is too tired can drift out of their lane or fall asleep at the wheel.
  • Distracted driving: A driver who is distracted by texting, changing the radio station, checking their GPS and other activities may not know they’ve crossed the centerline until it’s too late.

Types of Injuries Suffered in a Head-On Crash

Because a head-on crash throws those riding in a vehicle forward abruptly, it can result in serious injuries. If those inside are not wearing their seat belts, they can be thrown into glass or metal or be ejected from the vehicle, which is often fatal. Some of the types of injuries suffered in a head-on collision are:

  • Traumatic brain injuries: Just a jolt to the head at high velocity is enough to cause a TBI. Devastating changes can result from a brain injury, including memory loss, mobility and cognitive problems that alter a person’s ability to care for themself.
  • Internal trauma: Internal bleeding and organ damage can occur from a head-on crash. Organs commonly affected include the spleen, lungs, kidneys and liver.
  • Facial trauma: Injuries to the face can occur from striking the windshield or steering wheel or even trauma from the airbag. Serious lacerations that result in scarring and facial fractures to the jaw, eye socket, chin, or cheeks can require plastic surgery to repair, which is usually not covered by insurance.
  • Spinal cord and back injuries: Severe damage to the spinal cord can result in temporary or permanent paralysis from the point the trauma occurred. Back injuries can include a ruptured disc or torn ligaments, muscles and tendons.
