Accident Along Highway 99 Involved Three Vehicles
A head-on collision in Red Bluff on westbound Highway 99 caused an injury in a three-vehicle crash on January 13. The crash was reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) at around 9:21 p.m., where Highway 99 intersects with Sunbright Avenue. A sergeant from Tehama County came across the accident where it was discovered that two vehicles had collided head-on in a major crash, and a third was hit by the debris from the collision.
One Vehicle Exited the Roadway and Ended up in a Field
Two of the vehicles blocked one of the lanes on the highway. A truck had exited the roadway due to the crash and gone about 100 feet into a nearby field and was missing the left front of the cab. Tow trucks were called to remove all three vehicles.
Minor Injuries Reported in Three-Vehicle Head-on Collision
At least one minor injury was reported in the collision. No information was provided on whether those who were injured were treated at the scene or transported to a hospital for additional attention. The CHP is conducting an investigation to determine how the crash happened and to assign fault.
Reasons a Head-on Collision Occurs
Head-on collisions are one of the most dangerous types of traffic accidents and often cause severe injuries and fatalities. The speed of both vehicles involved in a head-on collision combines upon impact, which is why these accidents are so serious. Some of the more serious types of trauma suffered in a head-on collision include:
- Traumatic brain injuries: Brain injuries occur when the head of the person in the vehicle strikes a hard surface inside such as the door frame or windshield. A serious TBI can mean an extended period of hospitalization and cognitive changes that prevent the injured party from living a normal life in the future.
- Spinal cord trauma: Damage to the spinal cord can cause paralysis that is temporary or permanent. The extent of the paralysis depends on the location of the break or fracture in the spinal column but can also cause loss of control of the bladder and bowels as well as sexual dysfunction. Those who suffer a serious spinal cord injury often require permanent assistance to accomplish daily tasks.
- Bone fractures: In a head-on collision, bones can be seriously fractured or crushed, which is much more serious than a simple break. In some cases, the fractured bone has to have pins or plates inserted to hold it together while it heals. A serious bone crush injury may lead to amputation.
- Burn trauma: When two vehicles collide head-on, a fire might start, which can lead to serious burn injuries, requiring extensive hospitalization and skin grafts or plastic surgery to repair.
- Abdominal trauma: Damage to an organ or internal bleeding caused by blunt force trauma necessitates a trip to the emergency room for surgery because it is a life-threatening condition. The patient requires hospitalization and care to recover.
