Accident Along the Roseville Bypass Causes Road Closure
A head-on crash in Roseville resulting in a fatality was reported on February 23 involving a wrong-way driver. The accident happened around 10:03 p.m. along the southbound Roseville Bypass near the eastbound Pleasant Grove Boulevard on-ramp. Officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that when they arrived, they discovered that a Subaru Impreza and Toyota Corolla had collided.
The driver of the Subaru Impreza had reportedly been driving the wrong way down the center divider when, for unknown reasons, he veered into the traffic lane, striking the Toyota Corolla head-on. The accident caused one of the vehicles to overturn and catch fire. The Toyota driver, a Roseville man, 39, who was not wearing a seat restraint, suffered life-threatening injuries and died at the hospital.
The driver of the Subaru, a 34-year-old man from Carmichael, also suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was placed under arrest by officers and faces charges of driving while under the influence of a controlled substance. He remains hospitalized. A third vehicle was also involved in the collision after his car was struck by debris but suffered no injuries.
Accidents Involving Wrong-Way Drivers
Injuries caused by wrong-way drivers can be catastrophic. The danger of catastrophic injuries and fatalities from a head-on crash is because the speed of both vehicles is combined upon impact. In other words, if two vehicles are both traveling at 55 mph, the impact will be as if one vehicle is slamming into a wall at 110 mph.
Head-On Crash Characteristics
- Wrong-way accidents occur primarily when drivers enter exit ramps the wrong way.
- In most cases, a head-on crash occurs between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. due to intoxication and lack of visibility.
- Elderly drivers are more likely to be in a wrong-way accident.
- The number of wrong-way accidents is higher on weekends. Drug or alcohol use is more prevalent on weekends.
