Highway 4 Pursuit Driver Crashes
I’m Ed Smith, an Antioch auto accident lawyer. Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a hot pursuit with a motorist driving a stolen construction truck on the night of Tuesday, November 8, 2016. The pursuit ended in a motor vehicle collision that injured several people and caused traffic mayhem during the evening commute for drivers traveling eastbound.
What Happened?
A construction vehicle was reported stolen to authorities at approximately 5:25 pm in the vicinity of Buchanan Circle in Pacheco. The vehicle was identified as a General Motors pickup truck and was spotted by a deputy headed eastbound along Highway 4 at 5:28 pm in Martinez.
Suspect Causes Motor Vehicle Accident Involving 16 People
Officers from the California Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit by immobilizing the stolen vehicle by way of setting down a spike strip. This caused the suspect behind the wheel of the stolen pickup truck to crash into the interchange area of Highway 4 and Interstate 680. According to Ian Hebert, a Lieutenant for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department, 16 individuals were involved in an automobile collision with the suspect operating the stolen vehicle. Reports indicate that three out of the 16 injured individuals were transported to the hospital via ambulance for treatment.
Suspect Flees from the Scene
The suspect driving the stolen construction pickup truck attempted to flee from the scene after crashing. However, deputies chased after the suspect and were able to arrest him close to the interchange connector. The suspect was detained by authorities for outstanding warrants and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. However, the suspect may face more charges as investigators search further into the case. The suspect has not been identified at this time.
