Farmers Market COVID-19 Precautions

Public health officials have designated Certified Farmers’ Markets as equivalent to grocery stores and therefore have been deemed an essential public service.  Even during a shelter-in-place order, essential food outlets are accessible pursuant to Public Health Official Order Section 10(f)(ii).

The market staff, as well as the farmers and producers they work with, follow all health and safety standards in order to provide safe and consistent access to nutritious food.

As a consumer, here is how you can help keep the farmers market a safe place:

  • Face coverings are required.
  • Only go to the market if you are in good health.
  • If possible, send only one person per family to shop at the market.
  • Touch only the items you are purchasing.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Be aware of physical distancing, and abide by signs and ground markings intended to maintain space.
  • Wash produce before eating it.

It looks a little different now, but here’s a video from 2017 showcasing the Folsom market:

Safety Measures You Will Encounter at the Farmers Market:

  • Ground markings to designate lines
  • Handwashing stations
  • Signs reminding visitors to maintain social distance
  • Limits on the number of customers per stall
  • On-site dining spaces have been removed
  • Product sampling is suspended
  • Staff will perform frequent cleaning
  • Wider market aisles
  • Adherence to county and state health code

Why Shop at a Farmers’ Market?

Shopping at a farmers’ market for fruits and vegetables and fresh food items has many benefits:

  • Maintain a robust immune system by consuming fresh produce full of vitamins & nutrients.
  • Fruits and vegetables traveling directly from farm to market are handled less frequently than the same items at a grocery store.
  • Open-air shopping presents a lower risk and allows for safe physical distancing.
  • Sunlight provides exposure to vitamin D and is a natural disinfectant.

Folsom Historic is a Certified Farmers’ Market

Certified Farmers’ Markets (CFM) are regulated by the laws of the State of California.  It is against the law for farmers to buy agricultural products and re-sell them at a CFM.  A CFM is certified by the Agricultural Commissioner, and a producer is allowed to sell only their own fruits and vegetables.  CFMs can only be operated by a certified producer, local government, or non-profit organization.  They have fewer regulations with regard to packing and labeling, as well as grading and size standards.  The exemptions to such regulations foster freshness and availability of the products offered at a CFM.
