Hit-and-Run Accident Seriously Injures Turlock Woman
I’m Ed Smith, a car accident lawyer in Turlock. A young woman was walking in Turlock during the nighttime hours of Monday, December 25, 2017. This Christmas night of cheer and joy drastically turned into a tragedy when a woman was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle. The woman, unfortunately, suffered major injuries as a result of another party’s negligence.
My sincere prayers and hopes for a speedy and full recovery go out to the woman that suffered injuries in this senseless incident.
What Happened?
A 20-year-old Turlock woman was crossing Center Street in the vicinity of F Street at approximately 9:45 pm. At the same time, a 2000 Toyota driven by a 53-year-old Turlock man was traveling along Center Street. The Toyota driver allegedly hit the young woman with his vehicle and fled the scene upon arrival of emergency responders.
Turlock Woman Suffers Major Injuries
Emergency personnel was called to the scene of the pedestrian accident to render aid to the young woman. Upon arrival, crews conducted a medical evaluation on the woman. The woman appears to have suffered major injuries and was transported to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. An update on her condition has not yet been released by officials.
Accident Investigation
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has not yet released an exact cause of the pedestrian accident due to ongoing investigation. Authorities later tracked down the suspect party of the hit-and-run a short time after the accident. Officials determined that the man was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs leading up to the accident. It is not yet known what offenses the man may face as a result of his actions.
Pedestrians and Auto Accidents
Pedestrian accidents are increasing in prevalence throughout California. According to a 2016 Stanislaus County Accident Statistic Report, approximately 185 accidents involving pedestrians occurred in 2016 alone. It is important to note that pedestrians are susceptible to suffering traumatic injuries or even death in collisions with automobiles due to their lack of protection. Motorists are obligated to exercise due care while operating a motor vehicle in the presence of pedestrians.
Insurance Coverage in Hit-and-Run Accidents
In incidents involving hit-and-run drivers, a pedestrian may resort to their own automobile insurance policy for compensation of incurred losses. Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist Protection (UM) is an optional automobile insurance coverage benefit in California, however, it can prove useful to those who carry it in a variety of circumstances. UM protection may be used in a hit-and-run accident where the suspect party is unidentified and/or does not have auto insurance. This type of protection may also be used when an at-fault party does not have enough Bodily Injury Liability Coverage to compensate accident victims for their damages.
