Atwater Auto Accident Fatality
An Atwater auto accident fatality occurred on the morning of January 10 in the area of Palm Avenue and Shaffer Road. A 19-year-old Merced man was driving his 2007 GMC Yukon northbound along Shaffer Road when he veered his vehicle into the oncoming traffic lane to overtake a Jeep Grand Cherokee. While doing so, the man’s GMC collided head-on with a southbound Toyota Camry. Medical personnel responding to the scene transported three occupants in the GMC to a Modesto hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. Sadly, the Toyota driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. Officials have withheld the name of the decedent but identified him as a 65-year-old Livingston resident.
We would like to take this moment to extend our condolences to the friends and family of the decedent in their time of loss and sorrow.
Head-On Collisions
Head-on collisions such as the one above occur less frequently than most other car wrecks. While these crashes comprise only 2 percent of all auto accidents, they account for nearly one-fifth of all traffic collision deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This type of car crash commonly occurs:
- Along rural roads when a driver is overtaking another car or believes there is no other traffic and rides along the centerline
- At intersections, when a driver miscalculates the speed at which another vehicle is traveling or when a driver runs a red light
- Distracted driving, causing a driver to allow their car to veer into an opposing lane
- During adverse weather conditions when it is difficult to see roadway signage
- On highways, caused by a wrong-way motorist
- When a motorist enters a one-way street the wrong way
Auto Accidents and Wrongful Death
Driving can be dangerous and can lead to an Atwater auto accident fatality. When driver error is attributable to a wrongful death car accident, the family of the deceased may pursue a wrongful death claim against the responsible party for damages incurred. While no amount of compensation can ever replace a loved one, a claim for wrongful death can help reduce financial worry over having hospital bills associated with a collision, funeral expenses, and other necessities covered.
