Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Pedestrian, Causing Collison with Cruise Car

A woman was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in San Francisco. The driver struck her, propelling her into the path of a driverless Cruise car, which then ran her over. This event was captured on video by the autonomous vehicle.

The collision occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Fifth and Market Streets. The driverless car and the other sedan were heading south on Fifth Street, driving side by side. The video, approximately 20 seconds long, captures the entire incident, including the moments leading up to it.

The footage starts with both vehicles stopped at a red light. Both vehicles proceed south on Fifth Street when the traffic light turns green. The sedan, which was in the left lane, struck the pedestrian shortly after crossing Market Street. The woman, who was not in a crosswalk, was thrown over the sedan’s right side and into the right lane, where the Cruise car was traveling.

Cruise Cooperates with Police

Navideh Forghani, a Cruise spokesperson, stated that the autonomous vehicle applied aggressive braking to minimize the impact. The other vehicle’s driver fled the scene, and upon the police’s request, the autonomous vehicle remained at the scene.

According to San Francisco Fire Department Capt. Justin Schorr, rescuers discovered the woman trapped beneath the left rear axle of the Cruise vehicle. After Cruise remotely disabled the car, rescuers lifted it off her and used the jaws of life to free her. First responders transported the woman, who sustained multiple traumatic injuries, to San Francisco General Hospital. Her current condition remains unknown. The San Francisco Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the accident.

This video features a report by ABC 7 News Bay Area on the incident where a woman suffered serious injuries after being struck by a hit-and-run driver, leading her into the path of a Cruise autonomous vehicle.

Handling a Hit-and-Run Accident: Steps to Take After the Collision

Experiencing a hit-and-run accident as a pedestrian can be an incredibly distressing and challenging situation. Here are five essential steps to follow if you find yourself in this unfortunate circumstance:

  1. Ensure Safety: Your immediate priority should be your safety and well-being. If you can move, try to get to a safe location away from traffic. If you’re unable to move or in severe pain, stay where you are and call for help immediately. If you have a smartphone, dial 911 or ask someone nearby to call you.
  2. Seek Medical Care: Getting medical attention as soon as possible is crucial, even if your injuries seem minor. Some injuries may not be apparent immediately, and a medical evaluation is essential.
  3. Gather Information: If possible, remember details about the hit-and-run vehicle. Note its color, make, model, and any distinctive features like bumper stickers or license plate information, even if it’s just a partial plate.
  4. Get Witness’s Contact Information: Look around for witnesses who might have seen the accident and can provide statements. In this situation, every piece of information can be valuable for law enforcement and insurance purposes. Once the police arrive, provide them with as much detail as you can recall about the incident, and make sure to get a copy of the police report for your records.
  5. Consult with a Lawyer: Contact a personal injury attorney specializing in hit-and-run cases to help you navigate the legal aspects and seek compensation for your injuries and damages. An attorney can guide you through identifying the responsible party and seeking the justice you deserve.

Remember that your insurance coverage might also come into play in hit-and-run cases. Insured motorist coverage can help cover your medical expenses and other losses even if the responsible driver is never found. An attorney can help you understand your insurance options and ensure you receive the appropriate compensation for your injuries and damages.
