Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident Fatally Injures Man Near Fresno
I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. A man was crossing Highway 99 during the early morning hours of Sunday, October 1, 2017. An oncoming vehicle collided with the man. The motorist continued driving, leaving the innocent man to succumb to his injuries at the scene.
Our heartfelt prayers and sympathies are with the loved ones of Mr. Perris who passed away in this devastating pedestrian accident.
What Happened?
A man was walking along Highway 99 in the vicinity of the Highway 180 interchange at approximately 4:25 am. While the man was attempting to cross the highway, he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The driver fled the scene following the collision.
Was He Injured?
Emergency personnel responded to the scene of the pedestrian accident. They located the injured man upon arrival. The man was, unfortunately, pronounced deceased at the scene. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as 61-year-old Rickey Perris from Fresno.
What Caused the Accident?
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. An investigation is underway. Usually, Traffic Collision Reports are processed in one to two weeks from the date of an accident. However, authorities have not yet located the alleged hit-and-run driver involved in the pedestrian accident.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA) concluded in a 2015 report that approximately 5,376 victims passed away in pedestrian accidents. The report found that 26 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred between 6:00 pm and 8:59 pm. The report also indicated that a pedestrian was injured every 7.5 minutes and killed every 1.6 hours in traffic collisions. It is important to keep in mind that pedestrians have no form of protection against a moving vehicle. Therefore, motorists should be aware of their surroundings and avoid negligent driving habits at all costs. Exercising extra precaution while traveling along the roadway is vital to ensuring your personal safety and well-being.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
A hit-and-run is generally defined as a party being involved in an accident involving a fixed object, another vehicle or pedestrian and leaving the incident scene without stopping to provide identification and/or render aid to anyone who may have suffered injuries. The level of the offense of a hit-an-run is based on the nature of the incident. If a hit-and-run resulted in serious injury and/or death, it will be most likely deemed as a felony charge. Most hit-and-run accidents tend to occur due to:
- Drunk Drivers
- Texting and Driving
- Unlicensed Motorists
- Uninsured Motorists
- Motorist has a Warrant for their Arrest
Motorists should always stop to exchange information and render aid when involved in a traffic collision. Failure to do so can result in serious consequences. It is best to consult with an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer for more information.
