Why a Rear-End Crash Occurs
Rear-end crashes are common, accounting for over 30 percent of all traffic crashes. They are most often caused by a driver not allowing enough time or distance to safely stop before colliding with the vehicle in front of them. Rear-end collisions can be extremely dangerous and cause serious injuries to those involved. Some of the common factors that lead to a rear-end car crash include:
- Following too closely – When drivers don’t leave enough space between themselves and the car in front of them, it can be difficult to avoid a collision if the other vehicle unexpectedly stops or slows down.
- Distracted driving – Due to texting, talking on the phone, eating, drinking or otherwise being distracted behind the wheel, drivers may not pay close enough attention to the road and traffic situation.
- Speeding – Driving faster than the posted speed limit or too fast for the current weather or road conditions reduces the time a driver has to react and respond if something unexpected happens.
- Poor visibility – Oncoming headlights, fog, rain, snow or other poor environmental conditions can reduce a driver’s ability to see what’s ahead on the road until it is too late.
- Driver fatigue – Tiredness can impair reflexes and reaction times as well as judgment, increasing the risk of an accident when driving.
- Poorly maintained roads/vehicles – Potholes, uneven surfaces, improperly marked lanes, and other road conditions can cause drivers to swerve, brake abruptly or otherwise take unexpected action.
- Brakes and other vehicle parts that are not properly maintained or defective can increase the risk of rear-end collisions.
- Aggressive driving – Tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic, sudden lane changes or any number of aggressive behaviors behind the wheel increases the likelihood of a crash.
