Three-Vehicle Accident on Eastbound US 50 Reports Injury
An injury collision occurred in Sacramento on December 27 in an accident involving three vehicles. The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. along eastbound US 50 just east of the Howe/Power Inn Road off-ramp. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident report stated that the accident involved a Nissan Frontier, Dodge Durango, and Nissan Altima. The accident blocked the slow lane, and one individual involved in the collision reported back pain. The CHP investigation into the cause of the injury collision is ongoing.
Back Pain Following an Injury Collision
Back pain is common following a traffic collision. One of the problems is that the human body is flooded with adrenaline during an accident, and this can mask symptoms that worsen or arise later. Some of the types of back injuries that can result from an injury collision include:
- Cervical strain or sprain: Commonly called whiplash, cervical strain or sprain is not a minor injury. It is caused by the rapid back and forth movement of the head during an accident and can have serious consequences. A cervical sprain can cause the ligaments and muscles in the neck as well as the shoulders and back to tear, which results in problems with movement, pain, dizziness and tingling, and numbness in the arms. Although most cases clear up within a few weeks, others can last for a long time or even become a chronic condition, limiting the individual’s ability to move, enjoy their life and work.
- Herniated disc: During a traffic accident, a disc in the back can slip out of place, rupture, or crack, which can cause significant pain and involve tingling, weakness or numbness into the foot. If the herniated disc occurs in the cervical spine, it can result in pain in the shoulder and neck and involve the arms and hands.
- Injuries to the soft tissues: Injuries to the soft tissues in the back can cause strains, sprains, or tears in the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Significant pain can be the result, which limits movement until the damage heals.
- Fractured vertebrae: When enough stress is exerted on the spine, one of the vertebrae may fracture or develop fissures or cracks. When the damage is severe enough, it may require emergency surgery to repair because it can affect the spinal cord.
- Spinal cord trauma: Trauma to the spinal cord can be a dangerous injury. Injuries to the spinal cord can cause temporary or permanent paralysis and nerve damage, requiring a home healthcare worker to be in attendance. A spinal cord injury often leaves the injured party permanently and severely disabled.
