Accident at Madison Avenue Off-Ramp Caused by Hit-and-Run Driver

A hit-and-run with injuries involving a female on a scooter and motor vehicle was reported in Sacramento on December 11. Sacramento Fire Department medics arrived at the scene to assess injuries to the rider. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) report stated that the accident occurred on eastbound Interstate 80 at the Madison Avenue off-ramp around 3:58 p.m.

At the time of this report, no additional information has been provided about injuries to the rider. The scooter accident will be investigated by the CHP to determine how it happened, and the driver who fled the scene will be sought.

Hit-and-Run Accidents

Hit-and-run accidents have become common all over the country. There are a number of reasons that a driver would be involved in a collision and then flee the scene. In many cases, the driver has no insurance or is driving on an expired license.

In other cases, the driver is carrying something illegal, such as guns or drugs, and doesn’t want to get caught. Of course, there are also drunk drivers who flee the scene rather than get arrested. By locating that driver, they can be held responsible for injuries to a scooter rider, pedestrian or another injured person.

How an Injury Lawyer Works to Locate a Hit-and-Run Driver

Over the years, my law firm has successfully located a number of hit-and-run drivers. We find it unacceptable that someone should suffer an injury and still be liable for the outlay of medical expenses as well as their other losses. We track down a hit-and-run driver and vehicle by performing the following:

  • Our investigators comb the scene of the hit-and-run to find evidence that can lead to the vehicle and driver. Among those efforts are taking photographs and looking for paint or metal parts that can be used to identify the vehicle.
  • Witnesses are interviewed. Some may be able to describe the vehicle or recall part of the license plate number. Others may have filmed the collision as it happened.
  • Accident reconstruction is performed, which can show which driver or other person was at fault.
  • Area cameras are checked to see if the hit-and-run was caught on tape. If it was, it can be used to help identify the vehicle and driver.

Using Insurance to Recover Compensation Following an Accident

If the hit-and-run driver is located, our injured client can obtain compensation from the at-fault party’s insurance company or take the case to civil court to recover damages. Another way to obtain damages is for the injured scooter rider to use their uninsured/underinsured insurance policy to obtain compensation, but the driver has to have been found to place a claim. A driver’s uninsured/underinsured coverage can be used other than for car accidents.

Your uninsured/underinsured auto policy is also usable for someone on a scooter, bicycle, or when injured as a pedestrian. If the injured party doesn’t have this insurance policy but another member of the household does, that can be used in its place. It does not affect the rates in the future.
