AAA’s Study on Teen Drivers

A recent study administered by AAA disclosed astonishing statistics involving teen drivers. For this reason, AAA is bringing awareness not only to teens that are not focused on the road while driving but also to the parents of those teen drivers.

According to a study conducted by AAA, there have been 14,000 vehicular collisions, some of which resulted in fatal accidents, involved teen motorists. Approximately two-thirds of the fatalities in the crashes associated with teen drivers were other individuals that were involved in the accidents. The study also included a survey with 142 driving instructors. The driving instructors reported that it was common for young drivers to drive around 15 miles per hour over the speed limit. A major factor in collisions involving teen drivers also included distractions from other objects in the vehicle, passengers and cell phones. In addition, the study also revealed that teen motorists are commonly subject to tunnel vision, which indicates they generally have poor road scanning skills pertaining to watching for hazards or risks.

Other Reports in AAA’s Study

AAA organized a study of drivers that were 45 to 55 years old. Approximately 77% of the following drivers admitted to using their smartphone and texting while operating a motor vehicle.

Who Influences Teen Drivers?

Parents are the primary role models for growing young adolescents. Children, most of the time, mimic the actions of their parents because they believe that it is acceptable. However, in the case of driving habits, parents are the leading cause of teens developing poor driving habits. Teen drivers are influenced by their parents therefore they are most likely to mimic their driving tendencies.
