Causes of a Single-Vehicle Accident Fatality
A single-vehicle accident fatality can occur for many reasons, including driver error such as speeding, distracted driving, and others. However, other outside influences can also lead to an accident fatality that includes:
- Roadway problems: When a government entity is negligent about the upkeep of a roadway or the design of the road is defective, it can lead to an accident fatality. Potholes, poor lighting, inadequate signage, and others can also cause this type of solo-vehicle accident. When the government entity is found to be negligent, the family of the deceased may file a wrongful death claim to recover damages.
- A hit-and-run or aggressive driver: In some single-vehicle accidents, it initially appears as though no other drivers were involved. However, the collection of evidence following an accident fatality may show that another vehicle caused the collision and fled or forced the crashed car off the roadway.
- Defective parts: A defective auto part can lead to an accident fatality when the driver loses control. Defective parts may range from engine failure to problems with the brakes, accelerator, or steering. This is why any vehicle that’s been involved in a collision should be retained, so it can be examined by engineers to look for defects. If it turns out a defective part was the cause of the accident fatality, the manufacturer and others in the production line may be held liable through an auto product liability lawsuit.
