Authorities Investigating Intersection Accident to Determine Cause
One party had difficulty getting out of their vehicle due to an injury. No data was provided on whether the injured party was treated by paramedics at the scene or transported to a nearby hospital for additional medical treatment. An investigation is underway by the CHP to determine fault and how the accident occurred.
Causes of an Intersection Accident Injury
Accidents at intersections account for 40 percent of all crashes. The reason they happen so frequently is that traffic is converging in the same location from different directions. The danger is also compounded by the presence of pedestrians, bicycle riders and others, all trying to get to their destinations. Common reasons that an accident injury happens at an intersection include:
- Rear-end collisions: A rear-end crash is common at an intersection when one vehicle strikes another that is waiting at a red light. In most cases, the driver to the rear is speeding and cannot stop, distracted or inebriated. Rear-end collisions, even at a slow speed, are a common cause of cervical strain or sprain.
- Right-hand turns: Impatient drivers may attempt to turn right even though traffic to their left blocks their view. In addition, this is a common cause of an accident injury to a pedestrian or bicycle rider as they cross the street.
- Speeding and running a red light or stop sign: These common actions often cause an accident injury. The speeder is unable to slow down or stop in time to avoid running a red light. Others may think they can pass through before traffic enters the intersection.
- Making an illegal U-turn: Although some intersections allow a U-turn, others don’t. Motorists who are going straight through an intersection can end up being struck by another vehicle attempting an illegal maneuver.
- Left turns: As the left-turn arrow changes to red, some motorists may attempt to make their turn instead of waiting. In addition, those who try and change lanes while in the middle of a turn can end up sideswiping another vehicle.
Investigation of an Intersection Accident
An accident injury caused by a negligent motorist can result in hospitalization with resulting high medical bills, lost wages, and the pain and suffering that accompanies the injuries. We investigate an injury accident to collect the evidence necessary to support a client’s compensation claim. This includes:
- The investigative team goes directly to the site of the accident injury to collect the evidence, including photographing the vehicles and site, which can include skid marks, broken pieces of metal, and paint.
- The collision witnesses are interviewed to understand what they saw. Some may have taped the accident as it happened, which provides compelling evidence.
- Accident reconstruction is performed, which indicates the positioning of the vehicles and frequently what motorist caused the accident.
- Video evidence is sought from nearby surveillance cameras.
- The investigators examine the police report to be sure that it is accurate.
Our injury attorneys take over once the evidence has been gathered and use it to build a case that supports our client’s compensation claim.
