Accident on SR 99 Involves Multiple Vehicles, Including a Semi
An accident injury was reported in Sacramento on June 2 following a multiple-vehicle crash that included a semi. The collision happened along northbound S.R. 99 at the 12th Avenue off-ramp around 4:13 p.m., which blocked all the lanes of traffic. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident report, the semi was fully loaded and weighed around 75 thousand pounds and was reportedly leaking diesel fuel.
Fire Department Paramedics Summoned After an Injury Was Reported
A complaint of pain brought first responders with the Sacramento Fire Department. Additional data on the injury was not forthcoming. The accident is being investigated by the CHP to discover why it happened and to assign fault.
Dangers of Truck Accidents
Because big rigs are so large and heavy, when a smaller passenger vehicle collides with one, it frequently causes severe injuries and fatalities. Some of the reasons these collisions are more dangerous than many other types include:
- Blind spots: The driver of a semi has blind spots on all sides of the tractor and trailer, which prevents them from having a clear view of surrounding traffic. The tractor itself can present a blind spot along almost the entire length. The blind spot on the right-hand side can cover several lanes. If a truck driver doesn’t notice or forgets that a vehicle is in its blind spot, stops quickly, speeds up fast, or changes lanes, it can cause an accident injury.
- Underride/Override accidents: If a truck driver stops suddenly, a smaller vehicle can slide underneath the rear end, which often results in fatalities and serious injuries. Occasionally, a big rig can pass over a smaller vehicle in front because the driver either doesn’t realize it is there or something goes wrong mechanically in the truck. This can result in an accident injury from the car being overridden.
- Rollovers: Any vehicle can impact surrounding cars during a rollover. However, a rollover experienced by a big rig can cause much more than an accident injury. It can impact a number of vehicles. If the vehicle is overloaded or the load is spilled during the rollover, that increases the risk of an accident injury, especially if the rig is transporting something hazardous.
- Lack of maintenance: A big rig with faulty brakes, steering, or accelerator becomes an enormous hazard on the road. In an area where there are no side slopes to stop one when it goes out of control or the brakes fail, it’s only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs, which may include jackknifing.
Investigating a Truck Accident Injury
Truck accidents are complex and require the services of an injury attorney for the injured party to obtain fair compensation. Our investigators are hard at work collecting the following evidence:
- The investigators prepare a list of who may be at-fault in a truck accident, including the driver, owner of the company, cargo loader, maintenance mechanic, and others.
- The traffic accident report by the police has to be examined to ensure its accuracy.
- The electronic logging book or logbook has to be checked to ensure the driver was complying with state and federal regulations on hours driven and rest breaks.
- Witnesses are interviewed.
- Forensic reconstruction is performed to indicate the positioning of the vehicles involved in the accident and to point to the at-fault party/parties responsible for the accident crash injury.
