Woodland Man Killed in Accident

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 59-year-old man and resident of Woodland tragically lost his life in a collision with a motorcyclist near Clearlake Oaks on Thursday afternoon.

Details of the Collision

The CHP told reporters that the collision happened not long after noon on Thursday, June 1, 2017, on Highway 20. It took place a short distance east of Clearlake Oaks close to the intersection of New Long Valley Road.

The deceased man had reportedly been driving a 2011 Ford F-350 west on Highway 20 when, for reasons that are unclear, his vehicle drifted across the median and into the eastbound section of the roadway. A 58-year-old male resident of Clearlake Oaks happened to be riding a 2017 BMW motorcycle, in the eastbound lane. Although the motorcyclist told CHP that he attempted to steer clear of the oncoming truck, he collided with the vehicle’s front left side and was thrown off of his motorcycle from the force of the collision.

Injuries and Response

When emergency responders arrived on the scene of the collision, they found that the Woodland man had died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash. The motorcyclist was found in critical condition and transported by helicopter to the nearby Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The motorcyclist was placed in an intensive care unit for treatment of his traumatic injuries. As of the latest report, the man was still in the intensive care unit but in a stable condition.

Causal Factors

CHP has this incident under active investigation as they try to piece together what caused this crash. However, it was reported that driving under the influence does not appear to have played a part in causing the accident. Additionally, the deceased man was found to have been wearing his seatbelt during the collision.

Motorcycle Accidents

According to information gathered by the Department of Transportation, motorcyclists are involved in fatal collisions about 35 times more often than people driving regular passenger cars and trucks. These accidents oftentimes result in catastrophic injuries or even death. Also, the rate at which alcohol use and speeding are factors in motorcycle accidents has been shown to be higher than in regular vehicle accidents, regardless of whether it is the motorcyclist or the other driver who is drinking and/or speeding.
