Ambrose Park Pool Opens

The Ambrose Park on Memorial Way in Pittsburg will reopen after being closed for eight years. The Ambrose Recreation and Park District is holding a grand reopening ceremony today at 11 a.m.

The brief ceremony will include speeches by community leaders and light refreshments. The pool will open after this ceremony and be free to all visitors on the day of the reopening.

The New Pool

The new Ambrose Pool is only two-thirds the size of the older pool, but now includes an updated bathroom and shower facilities. The picnic area of the park has also been redone and now includes a larger area with covered tables for family picnics.

It will be open daily from noon to 5 p.m. for the duration of the summer.

Why was the pool closed initially?

The pool was initially closed in 2009 after inspectors found several code violations at the property. The violations would have cost the parks district an estimated $750,000 to repair. As the park district did not have that kind of money at that time, the pool was closed.

About the Rebuilding Process

The process of rebuilding the pool began in September 2013 when the Ambrose Recreation and Park District Board of Directors asked the community what the people wanted at the Ambrose Park facility. Members of the community overwhelming sought the rehabilitation of the existing pool facility. The Board then authorized $1.5 million for the reconstruction.

The redesign plans were approved in the summer of 2015 and the Board of Directors gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony on 11 June 2016. Construction began shortly thereafter and was scheduled to be completed for the Memorial Day weekend in 2017.

Unexpected rainfall in the winter of 2016 and several other problems minorly delayed the work, meaning crews could not meet the Memorial Day deadline. Instead, the pool is opening one weekend later on 3 June.

Funding Woes

The project was also delayed several times by the same funding problems that closed the pool initially. Some funds had to be redirected towards other projects and several aspects of the rebuilding cost more than initially budgeted. Nevertheless, the project was completed and Pittsburg and Bay Point families will be able to enjoy the renovated pool this summer.

Community Parks and Pools in Pittsburg and Bay Point

The Ambrose community pool is especially important because it will serve both the Pittsburg and Bay Point communities as it sits just shy of Bay Point’s border at Bailey Road. This area depends on community facilities during the summer and this pool will be a welcomed addition to the area’s current parks.

Pool Safety

Pools provide great enjoyment for people of all ages during the summer, but it is important that visitors remember basic safety precautions to avoid serious injury or death. The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Pool Safety Project recommends children never be unattended at a pool.

Additionally, the project recommends that parents teach children how to swim and educate their children on the dangers of playing near pool drains.
