Suffering Carotid Artery Aneurysms

Car accidents have become incredibly common and the injuries that stem from them are just as common. Recent statistics published by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration showed that:

  • In 2016, distractions while driving, such as cell phones, contributed to close to 3,500 deaths in auto accidents.
  • Fatigue while driving led to more than 800 deaths in 2016.
  • Alcohol is still a major contributor to car accidents, killing close to 10,500 people in 2016.
  • A similar number of people were killed in crashes involving speeding.
  • More than 10,000 people who were killed in car accidents in 2016 were not wearing a seatbelt.

These numbers indicate that car accidents are prevalent; however, they are still a serious problem. Even though car accidents happen all the time, it is important for everyone to continue to focus on ways to prevent these accidents from happening. If not, people can suffer potentially fatal traumatic injuries. Sometimes, these injuries are not noticed until after the crash has occurred.

Blood Vessel Injuries in Car Accidents

The blood vessels are responsible for carrying blood throughout the body. Deoxygenated blood returns to the lungs via the veins, while blood that carries oxygen to the rest of the body is transported through arteries. Many blood vessel injuries could occur in a car accident, which includes:

  • Simple cuts, scrapes, and lacerations which damage the capillaries.
  • Deep, penetrating injuries could puncture the arteries or the veins.
  • Ruptures of blood vessels can occur with major blunt trauma.
  • Dissections of blood vessel walls could develop in a serious car accident.

The biggest risk of injury to the blood vessels is that people could bleed to death if the wall of a blood vessel is damaged.

The Development of Carotid Artery Aneurysm

A research paper was recently published describing an aneurysm that could develop following a car accident. An aneurysm describes an area of the wall of a blood vessel that has been damaged. The vessel wall could be injured in a car accident by either blunt or penetrating trauma. Because it has been damaged, the wall of the blood vessel pokes out, like a sac. This sac can fill with blood and, eventually, rupture. When it ruptures, people could bleed to death quickly. Therefore, it is important for everyone to see a medical provider after a car accident. Sometimes, these aneurysms could be missed.
