Antelope Car Crash Due to Head-On Collision
A violent Antelope car crash on December 9 shortly before 8:30 in the evening that occurred at Antelope Road and Watt Avenue resulted in injuries. The head-on collision between a Honda sedan and another unnamed vehicle left the eastbound lanes blocked off by the fire department. The accident will be investigated by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to determine the cause and place fault in the collision. It has not been reported whether drugs or alcohol was a factor in the crash. Although an ambulance was summoned to the scene of this Antelope car crash, no information has yet been released on the identity/identities of those who were injured, the extent of those injuries or what hospital they were taken to for treatment.
Incidence of Head On Collisions
Head-on collisions such as the above Antelope car crash occur less commonly than most other accidents, comprising only 2 percent. However, because of the violence of a head-on crash, they account for about 18 percent of all traffic accident fatalities. This type of car accident commonly occurs:
- Along highways, caused by a wrong-way driver
- In intersections, when one driver runs a red light or misjudges the speed at which another vehicle is traveling and also when a vehicle is making a left turn
- Along rural roads when the driver is riding along the centerline, thinking there is no other traffic or when passing
- When a driver goes the wrong way down a one-way street
- When driving distracted because the car can drift into an opposing lane
- During inclement weather when it is difficult to see roadway signs
Injuries Due to a Head-On Car Crash
Wrongful death in a wrong way accident is generally violent due to the force of impact. In such crashes, the person is thrown forward by the impact. This means that they may suffer injuries due to the seat belt and shoulder restraints as well as an airbag. In addition, if they are not using restraints or if the airbag does not deploy, they will likely be thrown into the windshield. Some injuries frequently seen in a head-on collision are:
- Head and brain injuries: This includes lacerations to the head as well as traumatic brain injuries. The latter can cause significant injuries and life-long disabilities.
- Fractures: The majority of fractures seen with a head-on collision involve the lower extremities as well as pelvic fractures. Due to the type of accident, femur fractures also occur. Broken bones in the legs are common. Depending on the position of the individual, upper extremity fractures are also seen.
- Chest trauma: Injuries to the chest, such as the ribs, lungs, and heart, occur due to the pressure of the restraint during a frontal impact. Additionally, if the restraints are not used, the person will most likely impact the steering wheel or be ejected.
- Back injuries: The force this crash imposes on the body often leads to back injuries. Such injuries may be mild or require surgical intervention.
Establishing Liability in a Head-On Collision
In some cases, such as intersection crashes, it is important to establish liability so that the injured person is able to obtain compensation to pay personal injury damages. A lawyer who has handled many of these types of accidents is invaluable in building a strong case and proving fault. In addition, personal injury lawyers do not charge up front for investigating the case. They only get paid if their client wins.
