Antelope Pedestrian Accident Injury

An Antelope pedestrian accident injury occurred at Heartland Drive and Tetotom Park Way on February 19. The accident, near Tetotom Park, occurred shortly after 6:15 in the morning and was initially reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as occurring between a Toyota Camry and Chevy Cavalier. The individual who reported the accident said that her husband was walking in front of their driveway when he was struck by the Chevy. The Chevy driver then left the scene of the accident.

CHP went on to say that emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department were called to the scene to assess the pedestrian’s injuries. They also reported the incident as a hit and run accident, which can carry serious penalties. It is unknown whether the pedestrian suffered serious injuries as a result. The CHP is in charge of investigating the accident and locating the hit and run driver.

Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians have to be proactive for their own safety and use the same duty of care that is expected of motorists. There are many ways to accomplish this, including the following tips:

  • Always cross streets at marked intersections whenever possible. It can be worthwhile to walk an extra block to reach one. Motorists do not expect pedestrians to be crossing in the middle of a block and may not see them.
  • Ensure that you have a clear view in both directions when entering a crosswalk, and do not try to beat a car that is coming. It is difficult to gauge the speed of a vehicle and could be a fatal error.
  • One good tip is to wear bright colors during the daylight hours. This can help a motorist spot you more easily.
  • After the sun has gone down, never wear dark colors, especially black. This can make you invisible to motorists. Instead, wear light colors, and using a jacket with reflective strips, while carrying a flashlight, is a good idea.
  • Even if you have the right of way, stop, look around and listen before crossing. The old dictum given by mothers to look left, right, left is safe advice.
  • Turn lanes can be particularly dangerous, so use caution when crossing where vehicles are allowed to turn.
  • Watch out for vehicles exiting driveways, alleys and side streets.
