Wrong-Way Crash Killed Two
Two residents of Antioch were killed in a wrong-way crash in Danville on Sunday, June 7. The fatal head-on collision happened at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Interstate 680. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 27-year Concord woman was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-680 near El Cerro Boulevard/El Pintado Road interchange in Danville. She was driving a 2020 Ford Fusion that crashed head-on into an oncoming 2012 Honda Civic from the northbound lanes, killing both the driver and passenger inside the Honda. Right after the head-on crash, the Honda was involved in an additional crash with another car. No injuries resulted from the second accident, said CHP. Upon CHP and emergency personnel arrival, the female driver of the wrong-way vehicle was located and detained.
Inside the Honda Civic was the driver who has been identified as a 46-year old woman, Nettie Perkett, and her 26-year old male passenger, Taurean Lee. Both were from Antioch, and both were killed upon impact. The driver of the Ford sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transferred via ambulance to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for treatment.
Multiple Charges from Wrong-Way Crash
The preliminary investigation concluded that the Ford driver was impaired while she was driving on Interstate 680. On Monday, June 8, CHP said that she was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and a felony driving under the influence. She will be under law enforcement custody and booked into the county jail upon her hospital release.
Loss of a Loved One
The loss of a close relative is one of the most devastating experiences a family can ever go through. When the death was caused by the negligence of someone else, it may compound their grief with anger and frustration, knowing that the accident was entirely preventable in the first place. While it is understandable that surviving family members may feel reluctant about taking legal action and hiring an Antioch wrongful death lawyer to represent them, a wrongful death claim may be the only means of holding negligent parties financially accountable for their wrongdoing and planning a secure future for those left behind.
Who is Eligible to File a Wrongful Death Claim?
A wrongful death claim can be filed by family members, such as the following:
- A spouse or putative spouse
- A child, including step-children and adopted children who were supported by the decedent
- Minors who lived with the decedent a minimum of six months before the loved one’s death and received half or more of their support from the decedent
- Other family members
