Arden-Arcade Bicycle Injury Accident
An Arden-Arcade bicycle injury occurred on December 20 when a hit-and-run driver struck a bicyclist who was walking a bike in a crosswalk. The accident happened shortly after 9:30 in the morning at Bell Street and Alta Arden Expressway. Driver Error in a Bicycle Accident
Many accidents occur each year to bicyclists because of negligent drivers. Although cyclists have the same rights as others who share the roadways, not all drivers are cautious to prevent an accident at an intersection or crosswalk. Some of the reasons drivers are negligent around bicycle riders include:
- Speeding: In 2016, the California Office of Traffic Safety reported more than 3,300 traffic accidents in Sacramento County where speeding was a factor. A driver who is speeding through an intersection may not be able to stop and cause a bicycle injury.
- Running a red light or traffic sign: Unfortunately, this is a common behavior among motorists. Some are trying to beat a yellow light before it turns red, while others are simply ignoring traffic laws. Either way, it can cause a bicycle injury if the rider is in the crosswalk at the time.
- Distracted driving: Distracted driving is a common problem in California because a driver may be texting or talking on a cell phone, chatting with other passengers or eating and drinking something. All attention should be focused on the road and surrounding traffic to avoid a collision.
- Drunk driving: Drunk drivers in Sacramento County contributed to more than 1,300 accident injuries and fatalities in 2016. Drivers who are inebriated have blurred vision and poor reflexes and judgment. This can lead to a bicycle injury.
- Fatigued driving: People who work shifts, don’t get enough sleep the night before, take certain medications or who have medical problems may be driving while too tired. This puts them at risk of not paying proper attention or even falling asleep behind the wheel of a car. These actions can lead to a bicycle injury.
