Arden-Arcade Crash at Intersection

An Arden-Arcade crash happened near the intersection of Marconi Avenue and Wright Street on December 20, which resulted in one person being taken to Kaiser North for treatment and further evaluation. The accident happened just after 10:00 in the morning. According to the report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred between a Hyundai and Toyota, which left the roadway blocked along Marconi Avenue eastbound. Sacramento Fire Department personnel moved the vehicles to the Metro PCS parking lot to allow traffic to pass. The case is being investigated by CHP to determine a cause and to assign fault in the collision.

Intersection Accidents

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that there are about 2.5 million intersection accidents each year, which amounts to 40 percent of all collisions. Fifty percent of the time, intersection accidents result in serious injuries, while 20 percent lead to fatalities.

Reasons Intersection Accidents Happen

Crossroads are always a danger to motorists, bicycle riders, pedestrians, and motorcyclists. This is because motorists and others can pass straight through or may be turning right or left. In addition, not all intersections have lights or stop signs and depend on the motorist or another person to use caution to avoid a crash. Most intersection accidents are caused by driver error. However, some reasons can be environmental, which accounts for fewer than 4 percent of all intersection accidents. Driver error that can contribute to an intersection accident includes:

  • Trying to second-guess the other driver: It can be easy to falsely assume what the other driver is going to do. Some drivers increase their speed near intersections, turn without signaling or change lanes. This can lead to a crash.
  • Making an illegal maneuver: Illegal U-turns, turning in front of an approaching vehicle and other maneuvers can cause a crash. Running a stop sign or red light is another major reason. Entering an intersection out of turn when there is no stop sign or traffic light can also cause an accident.
  • Neglecting to look for others: Drivers are less likely to watch for motorcyclists, cyclists or pedestrians. Being sure that the way is clear before entering an intersection is vital.
  • Distracted driving: A distracted driver may be tuning the radio, texting or talking on a cell phone or chatting with passengers. Anything that keeps the driver’s attention from the task at hand can lead to a collision.
  • Aggressive driving and road rage: Tailgating, cutting in and out of lanes, horn honking and other aggressive behaviors can cause a crash.

Other Causes of a Crash

Weather conditions such as rain, sleet or snow can lead to an accident. In bad weather, if a driver cannot stay home, he or she should reduce speed and leave more room between vehicles to avoid a crash. Lack of proper roadway maintenance by a government entity such as the county or state can also lead to an accident. This can include obscured traffic signs, potholes or fissures in the road and poorly marked lanes.

How a Lawyer Helps

Accidents near or in intersections can be complicated with one driver accusing another of negligence. An attorney experienced in car accidents can assist by dealing with the insurance company on your behalf. If the insurance company refuses to pay what you need to cover your outstanding medical costs and time lost at work, he or she can prepare a strong case for fair compensation, which also includes the pain and suffering you endured as a result of the crash.
