Pedestrian Fatalities
In 2016, the Governors Highway Safety Association reported that California ranked 5th in the number of fatalities to pedestrians. Nationwide, while the highest number of pedestrian fatalities (33 percent) occurred on local streets, the second highest number (25 percent) occurred on state highways, and the third highest number (16 percent) occurred on U.S. highways. In Sacramento that same year, there were 644 recorded injuries and fatalities.
Driving Safety
To prevent an Arden Arcade pedestrian accident, there are tips that a driver can follow to help avoid an accident. These include:
- Always keep an eye out for pedestrians. While most try to use designated crosswalks, that doesn’t always happen and can result in an Arden Arcade pedestrian accident.
- Yield to pedestrians whenever possible, even if they are jaywalking.
- When stopping at a light or traffic sign, never stop inside the crosswalk and give walkers plenty of room. Patience is key.
- Never drive drunk or while under the influence of drugs. This can affect your reaction time, vision and judgment and could cause an Arden Arcade pedestrian accident.
- Don’t speed. It has been shown that the faster a vehicle is going, the worse the injuries will be to a pedestrian. It also raises the risk of a fatality.
- Use caution when backing because someone walking behind your vehicle at the same time may end up as a pedestrian accident.
- Be especially cautious in areas where children gather such as school zones, parks and public buildings. Children are harder for a motorist to spot and may run out in front of your car.
